Today is the presidential runoff in France, where the far-right is running for office

Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) has made historic gains in the first round of France's parliamentary elections, raising the possibility of the country's first far-right government since World War Two. Despite these gains, opinion polls suggest the RN may win the most votes but will likely fall short of a majority. This could result in a chaotic hung parliament, undermining President Emmanuel Macron's authority.

Le Pen's RN has increased its support due to voter dissatisfaction with Macron, economic hardships, and immigration concerns. Although the RN looks set to become the dominant legislative force, it may not reach the 289-seat majority needed to claim the prime minister's position.

The final outcome of the runoff election will depend on whether voters heed the calls of anti-RN alliances or support far-right candidates. The election results could significantly impact France's political landscape and governance, potentially leading to policy paralysis until Macron's presidency ends in 2027.
