Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, landslide may have claimed seven lives


On Tuesday, a devastating landslide struck National Highway 66 in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, leading to grave concerns over the reported deaths of around seven individuals. The incident, which unfolded amid intense rainfall, triggered an immediate response from emergency teams, including the fire department, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local authorities, who swiftly mobilized to conduct rescue operations.

Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda provided details, stating that the landslide predominantly affected Shiruru village in Uttara Kannada, claiming the lives of seven people. According to reports, the landslide engulfed a roadside eatery where four workers and two tanker drivers had halted for a tea break, tragically leading to their presumed fatalities.

The landslide's impact was further compounded as several tankers were swept into the nearby Gangavali River, posing environmental and safety risks. Fearing potential gas leakage from the submerged tankers, authorities have taken preemptive measures by evacuating residents from approximately 12 adjacent villages. Uttara Kannada SP M Narayana confirmed the evacuation, highlighting the ongoing efforts to mitigate risks associated with the disaster.

In response to the tragic event, Karnataka Assembly's Leader of Opposition R Ashok emphasized the importance of providing adequate compensation to the families of those who lost their lives. He also called upon the state government to take responsibility and ensure comprehensive measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future. As rescue operations continue amidst challenging weather conditions, the community remains united in support and solidarity for those affected by this calamitous event.
