Wayanad landslides claim 106 lives, leaving hundreds trapped and destroying the entire area

Massive landslides have struck the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district, resulting in a devastating disaster. On Tuesday morning, heavy rains triggered multiple landslides, killing at least 106 people and injuring 128 others, with hundreds more feared trapped. The landslides occurred within just four hours, impacting several villages, including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha.

The destruction has been extensive, with entire localities wiped out and many people feared washed away in the Chaliyar river. Visuals from the affected area show trees uprooted, houses destroyed, and vehicles washed away, trapped in floodwaters and tree trunks. Rescue operations have been significantly hampered by incessant rain and massive boulders blocking access routes.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the situation as a "heart-wrenching disaster" and announced a state mourning period for two days. The Indian Army has deployed 225 personnel, including medical teams, and two Air Force helicopters—one Mi-17 and one Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)—to aid in the rescue efforts. The Indian Navy is also set to assist in the rescue missions.

A bridge connecting the affected areas to Chooralmala has been washed away, further complicating rescue efforts. Kerala Minister Veena George reported that around 70 people are injured and emphasized that proper treatment for the injured is being ensured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who have died in the landslides, and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The Prime Minister has also assured the Kerala Chief Minister of all possible assistance from the Centre.

In response to the disaster, a control room has been established, and helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833 have been issued for emergency assistance. Many families have been relocated to temporary camps or the homes of relatives.

Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed deep anguish over the landslides and the loss of lives, calling for coordination between rescue agencies and offering support. Congress MP KC Venugopal mentioned that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi might visit Wayanad soon.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in several districts, including Kasargod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Idukki, advising locals and tourists to exercise extreme caution.
