While AIADMK boycotts the Tamil Nadu bypoll, MK Stain's party hopes to win handsomely in Vikravandi

In the upcoming Vikravandi bypoll on July 10, NDA allies Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) are determined to challenge the ruling DMK's stronghold and secure significant gains.

The absence of the principal opposition party AIADMK from the Vikravandi bypoll has bolstered the DMK's confidence in securing an easy victory. The constituency, left vacant after the passing of DMK MLA N Pugazhenthi on April 6, 2024, presents a key electoral battleground with its 2,34,624 eligible voters.

PMK has nominated C Anbumani as its candidate, while NTK, gaining prominence as a pro-Tamil party following the recent Lok Sabha elections, has fielded Dr. Abhinaya. Both candidates belong to the Vanniyar community, highlighting a strategic focus on community-based politics.

Initially seen as a sure win for DMK's candidate Anniyur Siva, recent developments have injected uncertainty, notably the tragic hooch incident in the nearby Kallakurichi district on June 18, claiming 65 lives. This tragedy has provided leverage for PMK and NTK to sway AIADMK supporters, with Anbumani Ramadoss openly appealing to AIADMK loyalists to vote against the DMK candidate.

While DMK's campaign emphasizes government welfare initiatives under Chief Minister MK Stalin, PMK criticizes the party for failing to conduct a promised caste census and pledges 10.5% reservation for the Vanniyar community if victorious.

Controversy has also marred the campaign, including allegations of electoral malpractice such as the recovery of gifted dhotis and sarees at the residence of former Panchayat President AC Ramalingam, prompting PMK's demand for Anniyur Siva's disqualification. Additionally, a video purportedly showing cash distribution to influence voters has surfaced, further complicating the electoral landscape.

Despite these challenges, PMK and NTK are optimistic about increasing their vote share, particularly among Vanniyar community members traditionally aligned with AIADMK. However, the Dalit vote, a stronghold for DMK, remains pivotal in determining the outcome.

NTK's candidate Abinya Ponnivalavan, a young doctor leading an energetic campaign, symbolizes the party's aspirations to expand its influence from the previous election's 8000+ votes to over 20,000.

Historically, Vikravandi has witnessed fluctuating electoral margins, with DMK securing victory in recent contests despite a previous AIADMK win in a by-election. The constituency's political dynamics, characterized by its dominant Vanniyar demographic, underscore the complexity and significance of this upcoming electoral battle.
