The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday filed its first chargesheet in the alleged NEET-UG 2024 question paper leak case, marking a significant development in one of the most controversial examination scandals in recent years. The chargesheet names 13 individuals accused of orchestrating and participating in the paper leak and related irregularities. The accused include Nitish Kumar, Amit Anand, Sikander Yadvendu, Ashutosh Kumar, Roshan Kumar, Manish Prakash, Akhilesh Kumar, Avdesh Kumar, Anurag Yadav, Abhishek Kumar, Shivnandan Kumar, and Ayush Raj.
This initial chargesheet is part of an extensive investigation by the CBI, which has been working meticulously to unravel the complexities of the case. The agency has registered six First Information Reports (FIRs) linked to various discrepancies in the NEET-UG examination. While the case in Bihar focuses on the question paper leaks, the remaining cases from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra involve cheating and impersonation of candidates, highlighting the widespread nature of the malpractice.
The CBI has stated that its investigation is ongoing, and a supplementary chargesheet will be filed once all aspects of the case have been thoroughly examined. This ongoing investigation aims to identify and prosecute other individuals who may be involved in the scandal. In addition to the 13 individuals named in the chargesheet, several other accused are already in police and judicial custody, underscoring the broad scope of the investigation.
The 2024 NEET exam has been marred by significant controversy due to allegations of question paper leaks, cheating, impersonation, and the improper granting of grace marks. These issues led to widespread outrage among students, who demanded justice and a fair examination process. The situation escalated into a legal battle, drawing national attention to the integrity of one of India's most crucial entrance exams.
Investigations by the Bihar Police and the CBI have unearthed a network involved in paper leaks operating in Patna and Hazaribagh. This network was allegedly responsible for compromising the examination's integrity, affecting thousands of students who had prepared diligently for the exam.
So far, the CBI has arrested 40 individuals in connection with the case, including 15 apprehended by the Bihar Police. The agency has conducted searches at 58 locations, further highlighting the extensive efforts being made to uncover the full extent of the malpractice.
Despite these revelations, the Supreme Court, on July 15, observed that there was no evidence to conclude that the entire result of NEET-UG 2024 was vitiated or that there was a "systemic breach" in the sanctity of the examination. The top court dismissed the pleas for a re-test, emphasizing that the isolated incidents did not warrant a complete overhaul of the examination results.
The NEET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and is a pivotal examination for students aspiring to enter medical fields, including MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in government and private institutions. This year, approximately 24 lakh students appeared for the examination, making it one of the largest and most competitive entrance exams in the country.
The CBI's chargesheet and ongoing investigation aim to restore faith in the examination process and ensure that those responsible for compromising its integrity are held accountable. As the investigation progresses, the education community and the general public remain hopeful for a resolution that upholds the principles of fairness and transparency in the nation's examination system.
