Nine children died after a wall of a dilapidated house collapsed on them while they were present at a religious event in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district. Several children attended the event as their schools were closed for a holiday. The wall that collapsed on the children was from an old and crumbling house, and the condition of four of the injured children is said to be critical. Each of the victims' families will receive Rs 4 lakh in compensation.
At least nine children were killed after a wall of a dilapidated house collapsed on them during a religious event in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Sunday. Four children sustained injuries, and their condition is critical. The incident occurred when children were participating in a religious event in Shahpur, making earthen Shivlings at the premises of the Hardayal temple. The wall collapsed from a dilapidated house due to heavy rainfall, as confirmed by Sagar Collector Deepak Arya. The wall was said to be 50 years old.
Several children participated in the event since their schools were closed on Sunday. A bulldozer was used to find the children trapped in the debris. The children were found, and the site was cleared of debris.Â
Sagar Collector Deepak Arya explained that the children were sitting in a tent at the temple premises when the wall fell on them. The wall's foundation had weakened due to recent rainfall. The incident occurred at 8:30 am, resulting in nine children being buried under the debris of the wall.
On hearing about the accident, Rahli MLA and former state minister Gopal Bhargava reached Shahpur to take stock of the situation. District administration officials and police officers also arrived at the scene. The bodies of the children were brought to Sagar District Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his sorrow over the deaths of the nine children. He announced that the state government would provide financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the victims' families. The Chief Minister also directed the district administration to ensure proper treatment for the injured children.Â
State minister Govind Rajput told ANI that the administration is actively working on the situation and that they are all present at the site. The Chief Minister announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased children and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Rajput also mentioned that he had asked the Sagar collector to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
This tragic event in Sagar followed another incident in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, where four children were killed after a wall of an abandoned building collapsed on them while they were returning home from school. The Chief Minister expressed grief over this incident and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the victims' families. Police arrested two owners of the building in Rewa following the wall collapse and registered a case against them under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
