The investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has uncovered disturbing details about Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect. Roy, who was arrested shortly after the victim's body was discovered in a seminar hall on August 9, has reportedly confessed to the heinous crime during police questioning.
According to sources, on the night of the crime, Sanjay Roy engaged in a series of troubling activities. He visited two of Kolkata's red-light districts, Sonagachi and Chetla, after midnight on August 8. It was reported that Roy, along with another civic volunteer, ventured into these areas after consuming alcohol. While his companion entered a brothel, Roy remained outside, repeating this behavior at both locations. He was also said to have harassed a woman passing by, who appeared to be intoxicated, and later made a phone call to another woman, demanding nude photographs.
As the night progressed, Sanjay Roy returned to the vicinity of the RG Kar Medical College. He was seen loitering around the hospital's Trauma unit at approximately 3:50 am, heavily intoxicated. His erratic behavior continued as he barged into the operation theater and eventually made his way to the seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital, where the tragic incident occurred.
During police interrogation, Roy admitted to attacking the trainee doctor while she was asleep in the seminar hall. He confessed to raping her in a frenzied state. His confession also revealed a history of aggressive behavior at the hospital. Sources indicated that a few months prior, Roy had been involved in an altercation with a male doctor at the same hospital and had also verbally abused a female doctor. Although he had apologized for these incidents, his violent tendencies appeared to have escalated.
On the night of the crime, it was reported that Roy had been drinking behind the hospital around 11 pm, a spot he frequented while watching pornographic material. His movements throughout the night were erratic, as he entered and exited the hospital premises multiple times, seemingly scouting the area before committing the crime.
The case has now taken a significant turn as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has obtained permission from a Kolkata court to administer a lie detector test on Sanjay Roy. This move indicates the seriousness with which the authorities are handling the investigation, seeking to uncover the full extent of Roy's involvement and any additional details that may further clarify the events leading up to the horrific crime.
The revelations about Roy's actions on the night of the crime have intensified public outrage and deepened the demand for swift justice. The case has not only highlighted the tragic vulnerability of the victim but also raised critical questions about the safety of medical professionals, particularly women, in institutions that should be places of healing and safety. As the investigation continues, there is an overwhelming call for accountability and systemic changes to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
