Apple and Airtel are aiming for a bigger share of the Indian market. This is the strategy


Apple is intensifying its focus on the Indian market by partnering with Airtel, one of the country's largest telecom operators, in a bid to enhance its presence in India's rapidly expanding $28-billion entertainment industry. This collaboration represents a significant push by Apple to capture a larger share of the growing digital content market, which is becoming increasingly crowded with established global and local players.

Under the terms of the strategic alliance, Airtel's premium customers will gain complimentary access to Apple’s music and video streaming services. Specifically, Apple TV+ and Apple Music will be bundled with Airtel’s high-tier WiFi and postpaid plans. Although the financial details of this deal have not been publicly disclosed, the partnership is expected to provide substantial benefits for both companies.

For Apple, this move is part of a broader strategy to expand its user base in India, a market known for its price sensitivity and competitive landscape. By bundling its services with telecom plans, Apple aims to attract a large number of new users who might otherwise be hesitant to subscribe to standalone services due to cost concerns. This approach is reminiscent of Apple’s strategies in other markets, where it has successfully used partnerships to drive user growth and integrate its ecosystem.

The partnership comes as Airtel prepares to shut down its own music streaming service, Wynk. By aligning with Apple, Airtel hopes to offer added value to its customers while streamlining its own service portfolio. With Airtel’s substantial subscriber base of 281 million, this collaboration provides Apple with a valuable opportunity to broaden its reach and establish a stronger foothold in the Indian entertainment sector.

This initiative is particularly significant given the competitive nature of the Indian market, where Apple faces stiff competition from other major content providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar. Reliance Jio, another key player in the telecom sector, currently leads the market with approximately 489 million subscribers. In this context, Apple’s partnership with Airtel is a strategic move aimed at increasing its visibility and competitiveness in a rapidly growing and dynamic market.

By offering Apple’s premium streaming services as part of Airtel’s subscription packages, the partnership is expected to drive higher engagement with Apple’s ecosystem and attract a diverse range of Indian consumers.
