Beyond just becoming Trump's rival, Kamala Harris has made a number of fundamental campaign pledges

US Vice-President Kamala Harris is actively shaping her campaign for the upcoming November election by focusing on several core issues that distinguish her platform from that of Republican candidate Donald Trump. Following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid on July 21 and endorse Harris, she has solidified her position as the Democratic nominee. She selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, further cementing her campaign team. The official Democratic policy agenda is expected to be formalized at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, scheduled for August 19.

Harris has made a strong commitment to supporting the middle class, emphasizing the importance of making housing, health care, child care, and paid leave more affordable for working families. She has articulated a vision where building up the middle class will be a defining goal of her presidency. At a recent rally with Tim Walz, she reiterated that the campaign's focus is not only on challenging Trump but also on securing a future where these essential needs are met for all Americans. Harris’s speeches frequently highlight her dedication to improving economic support and affordability for everyday families.

In terms of health care, Harris has shifted her stance from earlier support for a single-payer system. During her 2020 campaign, she had advocated for a government-backed health insurance plan while allowing the continued existence of private insurance. Her initial plan proposed transitioning to a ‘Medicare-for-All’ system over a decade without increasing middle-class taxes, using funds from taxes on Wall Street transactions and offshore corporate income. She also proposed reducing drug costs by allowing the federal government to set drug prices based on international benchmarks and by using "march-in" rights to license patents to lower-cost producers in cases of price gouging.

Harris remains committed to addressing the student loan crisis, aligning with the Biden administration’s goals on this front. She has underscored her dedication to easing the financial burden on students by supporting significant loan forgiveness programs. Under Biden’s administration, over $168 billion has been forgiven for nearly 4.8 million borrowers. Harris has highlighted that nearly 950,000 public servants have benefited from this forgiveness program, a considerable increase from the 7,000 borrowers who had received assistance when Biden first took office. Her administration would likely continue to advance these efforts, despite the legal challenges faced by some of Biden’s student debt relief programs.

Reproductive rights are a central focus of Harris’s campaign. She has promised to sign legislation restoring federal abortion protections should Congress pass such a measure. Harris has emphasized her commitment to reproductive freedoms with her visits to Planned Parenthood clinics, a move that signifies her dedication to ensuring national protections for abortion rights.

Gun law reform is another priority for Harris. She has advocated for comprehensive measures such as universal background checks, red flag laws, and a ban on assault weapons. In her role as vice president, she has overseen the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which has built on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 to address gun violence effectively.

Additionally, Harris is focused on advancing voting rights. She supports legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, which aim to extend protections for voters and require federal approval for changes to local election laws. Despite previous challenges in Congress, Harris remains steadfast in her commitment to these goals, underscoring her dedication to safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring equitable access to voting.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, Harris’s campaign is expected to crystallize these priorities into the official party platform. Her focus on these critical issues aims to present a clear and compelling alternative to Trump, reflecting her commitment to addressing systemic challenges and implementing policies that resonate with a broad range of voters. Harris's campaign continues to emphasize her vision for a future that prioritizes economic support, health care, education, reproductive rights, gun safety, and voting access, positioning her as a strong contender in the upcoming election.
