At Madras Medical College (MMC), a poignant candlelight protest was organized by nearly 100 resident doctors, who gathered to demand substantial reforms to ensure their safety and security. This demonstration was fueled by the recent, horrifying rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which has ignited a broader movement advocating for the protection of medical professionals in India.
The participating doctors, who are Post Graduate Residents at MMC, voiced their demands for a thorough and transparent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They also called for the swift implementation of the Central Protection Act, designed to offer enhanced protection to medical personnel. Additionally, they demanded the resignation of individuals implicated in the crime, reflecting a desire for accountability and justice.
Madhavi, one of the protestors, spoke passionately about the pervasive safety concerns that have become a norm in the workplace. "How can a girl go to work peacefully, and how can any parent be at ease knowing their children are at work?" she questioned. Madhavi highlighted the systemic issues that have led to the normalization of safety challenges faced by junior doctors, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive safety reforms.
Abhirami, another participant, emphasized the need for increased security measures across medical campuses nationwide. While acknowledging that MMC provides adequate facilities and that management is generally responsive to feedback, she pointed out that this is not the case everywhere. "Basic facilities, regulated visitor access, proper lighting, and CCTV surveillance are essential, especially as we work tirelessly day and night," Abhirami said. Her comments reflect a broader concern about the uneven implementation of safety measures in different institutions.
The candlelight vigil was not only a call for immediate action but also a symbol of solidarity among medical professionals, highlighting their collective resolve to address safety concerns. The protest underscores a growing awareness and demand for systemic changes to protect those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
