Elon Musk shares the query he asks during job interviews to identify dishonest people

When it comes to job interviews, especially with high-profile figures like Elon Musk, you might expect rigorous questioning about technical skills or strategic thinking. However, Musk employs a deceptively simple but effective question to uncover the truthfulness of candidates. According to the New York Post, Musk has been using this particular question since 2017: "Tell me about some of the most difficult problems you worked on and how you solved them."

At first, this question might seem like a routine inquiry, but it is actually part of a sophisticated technique known as Asymmetric Information Management (AIM). This method is designed to help interviewers discern honesty by prompting candidates to provide detailed accounts of their experiences. Research supports the efficacy of this approach.

The AIM technique works on the principle that truthful individuals are more likely to provide comprehensive and specific responses about their problem-solving experiences. They are generally confident in their achievements and can articulate the challenges they faced, the steps they took to address them, and the outcomes of their efforts. In contrast, individuals who are fabricating or exaggerating their experiences often respond with vague or overly general answers.

A study published in the *Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition* corroborates this method, indicating that detailed responses are a key indicator of truthfulness. Cody Porter, one of the study's authors, highlights that "small details are the lifeblood of investigations." Detailed answers make it easier to assess whether a candidate is being honest or deceptive. Liars, on the other hand, might attempt to avoid giving specifics, hoping that less detail will make it harder for the interviewer to detect inconsistencies.

Musk's use of this question not only serves to identify dishonest candidates but also helps him gauge "exceptional ability." By examining how candidates discuss their problem-solving processes, Musk aims to determine if they genuinely possess the skills and expertise they claim. A candidate who can discuss their experiences in detail is often seen as more credible and capable.

Elon Musk's approach exemplifies his broader philosophy of challenging conventional methods. Whether in electric vehicles, space exploration, or even the hiring process, Musk is known for his willingness to innovate and push boundaries. His simple but effective interview question is a testament to his unconventional thinking and attention to detail.

So, if you ever find yourself facing an interview with Musk or any other discerning interviewer, remember this: be prepared to provide detailed, specific accounts of your experiences. Demonstrating a thorough understanding of your problem-solving processes might not only reflect well on your honesty but also highlight your capabilities, potentially giving you an edge in landing the job.
