Fairness in society Priority for the Modi government: President Murmu's speech to the country

On the eve of the 78th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a powerful address to the nation, underscoring India's progress in both social and political democracy. She highlighted the strength that lies in the country's diversity and plurality, which serves as a driving force propelling the nation forward as a unified entity.

President Murmu emphasized that social justice is a top priority for the Narendra Modi government, which has undertaken unprecedented measures to uplift marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other disadvantaged groups. She praised these efforts as essential for fostering a more inclusive society.

In her address, President Murmu quoted Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, stating, "Political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy." She reinforced the idea that the progress seen in India's political democracy is a reflection of the strengthening of its social democracy. 

"The spirit of inclusion permeates every aspect of our social life. We move forward as a cohesive nation, embracing our diversity and plurality," she remarked, stressing the importance of affirmative action as a tool for social inclusion. The President called for the rejection of any tendencies that create discord based on perceived social hierarchies, advocating for a more harmonious and united society.

President Murmu also highlighted several government initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized groups. These include the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan even Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan (PM-SURAJ) scheme, which provides direct financial assistance, and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), focused on improving the socio-economic conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Additionally, she mentioned the NAMASTE scheme, which aims to eradicate manual scavenging by ensuring that sanitation workers are not exposed to hazardous tasks.

Reflecting on the progress made in women's welfare, the President noted that government efforts have resulted in a tripling of budget allocations for women's welfare over the past decade. This, in turn, has led to increased female labor participation and an improved sex ratio at birth. She highlighted the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women Reservation Act) as a significant step toward women's empowerment.

President Murmu also recognized the vital role of farmers as "Annadata" (providers of food) in contributing to India's self-reliance in agriculture. She noted that their efforts have been instrumental in ensuring food security for the nation.

In addition, the President pointed out the substantial improvements in infrastructure, including roads, railways, and ports, driven by strategic planning and effective institutions. She expressed optimism about India's economic prospects, citing increased transparency in the banking and financial sectors as key factors that could elevate the country among developed nations.

As part of her address, President Murmu also acknowledged the observance of Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day), reflecting on the immense suffering and loss of life caused by the partition. She urged the nation to remember this unparalleled tragedy and stand in solidarity with the families affected by it as they prepare to celebrate Independence Day. 

In her concluding remarks, President Murmu expressed her hope for a future where India continues to grow as a strong, unified, and inclusive nation, built on the foundation of social justice and equality for all.
