Google has at last begun to release Pixel 8 smartphones that are built in India

Google is making significant moves in its India operations, with the first batch of locally assembled Google Pixel 8 smartphones now ready. This initiative comes just ahead of the launch of the new Pixel 9 series.

The Pixel 8, which was launched in India in October 2023, is the first model to be produced locally. Google announced its plans to assemble the Pixel lineup in India in August 2023, aiming to streamline operations and offer more competitive pricing in the Indian market. While the Pixel 8 is now being assembled locally, other models in the Pixel 8 series, such as the Pixel 8a, are not included in this rollout.

According to reports, Google’s global manufacturing partner Compal is collaborating with India’s Dixon Technologies for the local assembly of Pixel 8 devices. Google’s goal is to ship over 10 million Pixel phones globally this year, building on the 10 million units shipped in 2023.

The move aligns with Google’s strategy to deepen its presence in India’s growing smartphone market. This follows a similar strategy by Apple, which has been ramping up local production of iPhones through Foxconn and Tata Electronics. By the end of FY24, approximately $14 billion worth of iPhones were manufactured in India, representing 14% of global production.

As for pricing, Google may follow a pattern similar to Apple's approach. Just as Apple gradually reduced the prices of its iPhone models manufactured in India, likely, Pixel 8 prices might also decrease over time in the Indian market.

Google’s upcoming ‘Made by Google’ event, scheduled for August 14, 2024, will feature the launch of the Pixel 9 series. This new lineup is expected to include the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Additionally, Google may introduce the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 during the event.

The event is set to start at 10:30 PM IST and will be streamed on Google’s official channel. This timing is notable as it marks a departure from Google's usual practice of hosting its event after Apple's fall event. By showcasing advancements in AI and other features, Google aims to stay ahead in the competitive tech landscape.
