Huge protests break out when two girls are sexually abused at Thane School and a cleaner is arrested

The harrowing incident of sexual assault on two three-year-old girls at a school in Badlapur, Thane District, Maharashtra, has shaken the community to its core, leading to widespread protests and a strong response from the authorities. The assault took place on the nights of August 12–13 when the young girls, who were students in the pre-primary section of the co-ed school, went to use the toilet. They were allegedly attacked by a male cleaning staff member, Akshay Shinde, who has since been arrested and is currently under police remand for three days.

The trauma endured by the girls was revealed when they became visibly distressed and refused to return to school. Concerned, their parents questioned them, and the girls disclosed the appalling details of the assault. The parents, horrified by the revelation, immediately lodged a complaint with the police, leading to the arrest of the accused. The swift action by the authorities was crucial, but it was overshadowed by the fact that the school’s administration had failed in their duty of care, particularly with the CCTV cameras reportedly not functioning on the day of the incident. This lapse has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols in place at the school and across educational institutions in the region.

In light of the severity of the case, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough and impartial probe. The SIT, led by senior police officer Arti Singh, is tasked with uncovering the full extent of the incident, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of justice. This decisive action by the government highlights the gravity with which they are treating the case, acknowledging the need for an in-depth investigation given the sensitive nature of the crime.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured the public that the case will be fast-tracked through the legal system, with a special focus on delivering justice swiftly and effectively. The Chief Minister’s involvement underscores the importance of the case at the highest levels of government, reflecting the widespread outrage and demand for accountability.

Further measures have been announced by Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, who emphasized the need to strengthen safety measures in schools to prevent such tragedies in the future. He has mandated that all schools ensure their CCTV systems are fully operational at all times, and announced the formation of a committee based on the Vishaka Committee guidelines, which will be responsible for overseeing safety protocols in educational institutions. The minister also confirmed the suspension of the school principal, the class teacher, and two assistants who were responsible for transporting the children, signaling the government's intent to hold those in charge accountable for their failures.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of public anger, leading to significant protests in Badlapur. Enraged citizens, demanding justice for the victims, took to the streets, blocking local train services at the Badlapur railway station for several hours. The protests, which included the participation of local political leaders and their supporters, led to the shutdown of shops and other establishments in the area to show solidarity with the victims’ families. The school where the assault occurred was also forced to close temporarily as the community demanded answers and accountability.

The police, while managing the volatile situation, were forced to arrest several protestors involved in stone-pelting outside the school. This unrest reflects the deep-seated anger and frustration within the community, not only at the heinous crime itself but also at the perceived failures of the authorities to protect the most vulnerable members of society. The transfer of senior police inspector Shubhada Shitole, who allegedly delayed registering the case despite its serious nature, further underscores the urgency with which the authorities are now acting to rectify their earlier mistakes.

As the investigation moves forward, there is a strong and united call for justice from across the community, with demands for the strictest possible punishment for the accused. The case has sparked a broader conversation about the safety and protection of children in educational institutions, raising critical questions about the adequacy of existing safety measures and the responsibilities of those entrusted with the care of young children.

The government's response, including the formation of the SIT, the suspension of school staff, and the mandated improvements in school safety protocols, demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that such an incident is never repeated. However, the long-term effectiveness of these measures will depend on their rigorous implementation and ongoing oversight, ensuring that schools across the region are truly safe environments where children can learn and grow without fear. The Badlapur incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding the welfare of children, and it is hoped that the swift actions taken by the government will lead to justice for the victims and meaningful changes that protect all children in the future.
