In his address, PM Modi reiterated India's firm stance on peace, declaring, "India was never neutral in this war; we are firmly on the side of peace." He offered his personal involvement as a mediator, emphasizing his willingness to act as a friend to both nations in facilitating discussions aimed at ending the war.
This visit to Kyiv was particularly notable as it marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister had set foot in Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991. The timing of this visit was significant, coming shortly after Modi’s controversial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which had sparked considerable criticism from Western leaders and disappointment from Zelenskyy himself, who saw the meeting as a setback to peace efforts.
