Kolkata rape-murder: autopsy reveals victim was choked to death before being smothered

More harrowing details have emerged in the horrific case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, igniting outrage and widespread protests across the nation. The autopsy report confirmed that the young doctor was subjected to sexual assault and then brutally murdered by throttling and smothering.

The postmortem findings paint a grim picture of the violence inflicted on the victim. The report revealed that the doctor was strangled with such force that her thyroid cartilage was broken. Following the strangulation, she was smothered to death, with signs indicating a deliberate and sustained effort to silence her. The four-page report also disclosed a deep wound in her private parts, described as a result of "perverted sexuality" and "genital torture."

The assault and murder are believed to have occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on August 9. The report detailed injuries to her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg, further indicating the extreme violence she endured. The victim's nose and mouth were tightly clamped, and her head was likely pushed against a wall or floor, efforts that seemed intended to prevent her from screaming. Scratches on her face, believed to be caused by the assailant's fingernails, suggest that the victim fought desperately against her attacker.

The autopsy also noted that the woman was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, though the exact cause of the eye wounds has yet to be determined. These injuries, combined with the broken cartilage and other signs of struggle, underscore the brutality of the crime.

The trainee doctor's body was discovered in a seminar room at the West Bengal government-run hospital on Friday morning, sparking immediate outrage. A civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, Sanjoy Roy, has been arrested in connection with the crime. Roy, who was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had access to various departments within the hospital. His arrest on Saturday came after CCTV footage showed him entering the building where the doctor’s body was later found.

The murder has incited widespread protests led by doctors and nurses not just in Kolkata, but across India, demanding swift justice for their slain colleague. Medical professionals and the general public alike are expressing their anger and grief, calling for severe punishment for those responsible.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a stern warning to the Kolkata Police, stating that if they fail to solve the case by Sunday, the investigation will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This statement reflects the mounting pressure on law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensure such heinous crimes do not go unpunished.

The tragedy has not only shaken the medical community but has also highlighted the urgent need for stronger protections for women and greater accountability for crimes of this nature. The case continues to unfold as the nation watches, hoping for swift justice in the face of such a brutal and senseless act.
