Robert Downey remembers being asked to star in Dr. Doom by Marvel: Let's do it correctly

Hollywood icon Robert Downey Jr. has once again ignited excitement among Marvel fans by revealing that he was approached to play the iconic villain Dr. Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In a candid conversation with Awards Chatter host Scott Feinberg, Downey recounted a discussion he had with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, where the possibility of his return to the MCU was first broached.

During the interview, Downey shared details of this intriguing conversation with Feige, which took place about a year ago. The discussion revolved around the potential for Downey to step back into the MCU, but not as the beloved Iron Man, a role that had cemented his place as one of the cornerstones of the franchise. Instead, Feige floated the idea of Downey taking on the role of Victor Von Doom, the infamous antagonist known as Dr. Doom.

Downey recalled how the conversation began with Feige pondering the possibility of his return, sparking curiosity in both Downey and his wife, Susan Downey, who is also his producing partner. "He [Kevin Feige] said, 'It just keeps occurring to me if you were to come back.' Susan was like, 'Wait, wait. Come back as what?'" Downey shared, highlighting the initial surprise at the suggestion.

The conversation quickly turned serious as the two industry veterans discussed the challenges and opportunities of Downey rejoining the MCU, particularly in a role so drastically different from Tony Stark. Downey emphasized the importance of moving forward creatively and avoiding the pitfalls of nostalgia. "How can we not go backwards How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to beat expectations?" Downey recalled asking Feige during their meeting. It was then that Feige proposed the idea of Dr. Doom, a character-rich in complexity and moral ambiguity, which seemed to intrigue Downey.

Downey, known for his meticulous approach to character development, took the suggestion to heart and began researching Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel's most enigmatic and powerful villains. Feige's vision for the character evidently resonated with Downey, who noted that the conversation left him with a sense of excitement and curiosity about what could be possible in this new chapter of his Marvel journey.

The buzz around Downey's potential return to the MCU reached a fever pitch when, at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Marvel officially announced that Robert Downey Jr. would indeed be taking on the mantle of Dr. Doom in upcoming Marvel films. This revelation sent shockwaves through the fan community, as it marked a dramatic shift from Downey's iconic portrayal of Iron Man, a character synonymous with the actor's career.

In addition to Downey's return, it was also revealed that the Russo brothers, who previously directed Downey in several blockbuster Marvel films, including *Avengers: Infinity War* and *Avengers: Endgame*, would helm the upcoming movies *Avengers: Doomsday* (2026) and *Avengers: Secret Wars* (2027). This reunion between Downey and the Russos has only added to the anticipation, as fans eagerly await to see how Downey will bring the complex and dark character of Dr. Doom to life under the direction of the Russo brothers.

Downey's return to the MCU as Dr. Doom promises to be one of the most talked-about developments in the superhero genre in years. It not only marks the return of a beloved actor to the franchise but also signals a bold new direction for Marvel as they continue to expand their universe with fresh and unexpected twists. As fans await further details, the excitement surrounding Robert Downey Jr.'s transformation from hero to villain continues to grow, making his portrayal of Dr. Doom one of the most anticipated events in the MCU's future.
