In her first public statement since leaving Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, the deposed Prime Minister, voiced deep concern over the recent coup that ousted her from power. The statement, delivered through her son Sajeeb Wazed, marks Hasina's first communication since her abrupt departure from the country on August 5, 2024. She characterized the coup as a profound affront to her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding President of Bangladesh, and the countless martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation's independence.
Hasina condemned the actions of those behind her ouster, stating, "The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership we gained self-esteem as an independent nation, has been grossly insulted. They insulted the blood of millions of martyrs. I want justice from the countrymen." Her words reflect the events' deep emotional and historical significance, as she invoked the legacy of her father, a revered figure in Bangladesh's history.
In her statement, Hasina also urged the people of Bangladesh to observe National Mourning Day on August 15, which marks the anniversary of her father's assassination in 1975. She called on citizens to honor the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with "due dignity and solemnity," and to offer prayers and floral tributes at Bangabandhu Bhavan, the historic residence where he was killed.
Expressing concern over the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, Hasina lamented the loss of lives, including students, teachers, policemen, journalists, and cultural workers. She extended her condolences to the families of the victims, stating, "I offer my deepest condolences to those who, like me, are living with the pain of losing loved ones."
Hasina also demanded a thorough investigation into the killings and acts of vandalism that have erupted in the wake of the coup. She called for the identification and punishment of those responsible, emphasizing the need for justice in the face of the ongoing turmoil.
After a 15-year tenure as Prime Minister, Hasina's departure from Bangladesh was precipitated by escalating violent protests against her government. She is currently reported to be in a secure location in India, as the political situation in Bangladesh remains highly volatile.
