SL against IND, Expected XIs, 2nd ODI: When will Riyan Parag play for India

In the ongoing 3-match series between India and Sri Lanka, India is determined to secure their first victory after the gripping tie in the opening ODI on August 2. The match, held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, ended in a dramatic draw with both teams scoring 230 runs.

Despite the return of prominent players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India's batting lineup struggled to chase down Sri Lanka's total. Rohit Sharma delivered a strong performance, scoring 58 runs off 47 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. However, despite his efforts, the Indian innings faced significant challenges as other key players faltered. Shubman Gill, who was expected to contribute significantly, was dismissed for 16 runs off 35 balls, caught out by Kusal Mendis off a delivery from Dunith Wellalage. Washington Sundar, promoted to number four in the batting order, managed only 5 runs off 4 balls before falling to Akila Dananjaya, leaving India in a precarious position at 87/3 after just 15.4 overs.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer attempted to stabilize the innings with a 43-run partnership. However, both players were dismissed in quick succession, with Kohli scoring 24 runs off 32 balls and Iyer contributing 23 runs off 23 balls. This collapse left India struggling at 132/5 after 24.2 overs, with the match hanging in the balance. KL Rahul and Axar Patel then combined to form a crucial 57-run stand for the sixth wicket, taking 94 balls to add these runs. Yet, their dismissals within eight balls—Rahul for 31 runs off 43 balls and Patel for 33 runs off 57 balls—left India needing just one run from 14 balls with two wickets remaining.

Shivam Dube's determined knock of 25 runs off 24 balls brought India to the brink of victory. Unfortunately, in a dramatic finale, both Dube and Arshdeep Singh were dismissed on consecutive deliveries by Charith Asalanka, leading to a tie in the match.

As India prepares for the second ODI, they are considering a change in their lineup. Given the challenges faced in the first match, Riyan Parag may be included to strengthen the spin department. Parag, who has yet to make his ODI debut, could replace Shivam Dube in the team. His inclusion could help address the effectiveness of Sri Lanka's spinners, particularly Charith Asalanka, who took 3 wickets for 30 runs, and Wanindu Hasaranga, who claimed 3 wickets for 58 runs in the first game.

The upcoming second ODI is crucial for India as they look to secure their first win in the series and gain momentum for the final match. The potential debut of Riyan Parag adds an exciting element to the team’s strategy, and his performance could be pivotal in determining the outcome of the match. The Indian team will be keen to adapt and overcome the challenges posed by Sri Lanka’s bowlers to ensure they make a strong comeback and take a lead in the series.
