The deeply disturbing case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has left her family and the community in shock and anguish. The family’s experience has highlighted not only the gravity of the crime but also the insensitivity and potential mishandling of the situation by the hospital authorities.
When the victim's father received a call from the hospital, his worst fears were confirmed. He was told that his daughter had allegedly died by suicide, a claim that immediately raised doubts within the family. The victim's mother was overwhelmed with grief, and the family rushed to the hospital, only to face further distress. Despite their desperate pleas to see their daughter, they were forced to wait outside the hospital for three agonizing hours.
A relative who accompanied the family described the horrifying state in which the trainee doctor’s body was eventually found. The father, who was finally permitted to view his daughter’s body, discovered that she was not clothed, her legs were spread at an unnatural angle—indicating a level of violence that suggested severe trauma to the pelvic region—and there were shards of broken glass in her eyes. These injuries alone raised serious concerns about the initial suicide narrative provided by the hospital.
The detailed post-mortem report only added to the horror. It revealed that the victim had been strangled to death, with her thyroid cartilage fractured due to the force used. The report also documented extensive injuries on her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg, alongside severe bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. These findings pointed unequivocally to sexual violence and sadistic genital torture, indicating a level of brutality that went far beyond what the family had been initially told.
The family's ordeal did not end there. The report also indicated that the cause of the wounds around her eyes had not yet been determined, leaving some questions unanswered. The case, which initially seemed to be a tragic instance of suicide, quickly turned into a horrific account of a violent crime, prompting widespread outrage and demands for justice.
In light of the serious discrepancies and the brutal nature of the crime, the Calcutta High Court intervened and transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision was seen as a critical step toward ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation, one that could bring the true perpetrators to justice.
The family, now devastated by the loss of their daughter under such horrific circumstances, is calling for accountability at all levels—from the hospital authorities to the investigating agencies. They have expressed their deep sorrow, knowing that their daughter will never return, but they remain determined to seek justice for her. The case has not only shocked the local community but has also drawn national attention, highlighting the need for swift and transparent legal action in cases of such extreme violence and institutional failure.
As the investigation continues, there is hope that the CBI’s involvement will uncover the full truth behind this tragic and brutal crime, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and that such a tragedy is never repeated.
