Truth will emerge regarding the Kolkata rape-murder suspect's polygraph test results

Kabita Sarkar, the court-appointed defense lawyer for Sanjay Roy, who is accused of the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, made a strong statement on Friday asserting her client’s innocence. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Sarkar expressed confidence that a polygraph test, also known as a lie detection test, would clear Roy’s name and bring the truth to light.

Sarkar, who was appointed by a Sealdah court after no other lawyer was willing to take on Roy’s case due to the heinous nature of the crime, emphasized that her client was under immense mental strain because of the serious accusations against him. Despite this pressure, Roy is eager to undergo the polygraph test, believing that it will vindicate him. Sarkar elaborated on this point, stating, "My client Sanjay Roy also wants officials to conduct a polygraph test on him as it will bring the truth out. He is innocent and is eager for the polygraph test to clear his name."

Sarkar also revealed that she was present when Roy consented to the polygraph test. She explained that she took the time to ensure Roy fully understood what the test involved and that he gave his consent willingly. According to Sarkar, Roy's decision to agree to the test was driven by his desire to prove his innocence and clear the cloud of suspicion hanging over him.

Sanjay Roy is currently in judicial custody for the alleged crime, which shocked the city of Kolkata and the nation. The victim, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, was found in a semi-nude state with injuries in a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9. The case has sparked widespread outrage, with medical professionals across the country staging protests to demand justice for the victim.

Despite the overwhelming public sentiment and the gravity of the accusations, Sarkar maintained that her client is not involved in the crime for which he is being investigated. She stressed Roy's willingness to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and his readiness to undergo any tests necessary to establish his innocence. "Sanjay is prepared to undergo any tests necessary and is committed to assisting in every possible way to ensure that the real perpetrator is identified," Sarkar stated, underscoring Roy's commitment to proving his innocence.

When asked directly whether Roy had denied his involvement in the crime, Sarkar confirmed that he had. "He told me that he is not involved. He has assured me that he will fully cooperate with all aspects of the investigation," she said.

Kabita Sarkar’s defense of her client comes at a time when the case is under intense scrutiny. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the investigation, has already sought permission from the court to conduct the polygraph test on Roy, a request that was granted after Roy consented to the procedure. The polygraph test is seen as a critical step in the investigation, as it could potentially confirm or refute Roy’s claims of innocence.

The case continues to be a focal point of public attention, and the outcome of the polygraph test, as well as the overall investigation, will be closely watched. Sarkar’s defense of Sanjay Roy, particularly her assertion of his innocence and the insistence on a polygraph test has added a new dimension to the ongoing legal proceedings. The results of the polygraph test could have significant implications for the case, either bolstering Roy’s defense or further implicating him in the crime. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on ensuring that justice is served for the victim and that the truth, whatever it may be, is brought to light.
