The shocking case of Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, and his involvement in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has left the city of Kolkata in a state of deep distress and disbelief. The heinous crime, marked by its gruesome nature and the apparent lack of remorse from the perpetrator, has not only raised questions about the safety of individuals within supposedly secure institutions but also highlighted disturbing issues within law enforcement agencies themselves.

After committing the horrific act, Sanjay Roy, instead of fleeing or showing any signs of distress, made his way back to the barracks of the Kolkata Armed Police’s fourth battalion. His stay there was arranged by Assistant Sub-Inspector Anup Datta, a fact that has raised eyebrows and questions regarding the lax supervision and the possible complicity within the police force. Roy, known to be a habitual drinker, woke up the next day and, astonishingly, resumed his routine by consuming more alcohol and going back to sleep, displaying a chilling nonchalance toward the gravity of his actions.

The investigation into the trainee doctor’s death unfolded swiftly. On August 10, Kolkata Police officers meticulously reviewed CCTV footage from August 9, captured in the seminar hall where the crime took place. The footage revealed the presence of 15 individuals, with Sanjay Roy among them. The police identified Roy with the help of a patient who was admitted to the hospital and recognized him as a friend of Saurabh, another civic volunteer and acquaintance of Roy. Despite knowing the police were on his trail, Roy remained indifferent, showing no signs of fleeing or hiding. This indifference, combined with his habitual alcohol consumption, painted a picture of a man deeply entrenched in his own vices, with little regard for the consequences of his actions.

The investigators continued to gather evidence, leading them to discover critical items at the crime scene, including a Bluetooth headphone. In a decisive move, the police attempted to pair the headphone with the mobile phones of all suspects. The moment of truth came when the device automatically connected to Roy’s phone, a clear indication of his involvement. Confronted with this irrefutable evidence, Roy finally broke down during police questioning and confessed to the crime. His confession was detailed, revealing the cold and calculated nature of the attack. He also shockingly admitted to having molested another woman on the street on the same night, further underscoring his dangerous behavior.

However, despite his confession and the initial show of distress which he reportedly demanded to be hanged for his crimes, the following day saw a different Sanjay Roy. He appeared unperturbed, lacking any visible signs of remorse, as he calmly narrated the events of that fateful night to the police. This behavior has only added to the horror and revulsion surrounding the case, with many questioning how someone in a position of public trust could commit such an atrocity and then display such an appalling lack of humanity.

The case, which has already attracted significant media attention and public outrage, took a further turn when the Calcutta High Court intervened, ordering the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over from the Kolkata Police. The decision to involve the CBI highlights the severity of the case and the growing concern over the potential mishandling or bias in the investigation by local authorities, especially considering Roy’s connection to the police department.

As Sanjay Roy remains in judicial custody until his next court appearance on September 6, the case continues to stir emotions across Kolkata and beyond. It has brought to the forefront critical discussions about the need for greater oversight within police forces, the safety of women in medical and educational institutions, and the broader societal issues that allow such heinous crimes to occur. The case of Sanjay Roy is not just a tale of individual depravity but a stark reminder of the systemic failures that need urgent attention to prevent such tragedies from recurring. The city now watches closely as justice takes its course, hoping for accountability and a resolution that may bring some solace to the victim’s family and the traumatized community.
