A Kerala woman attempts to unlock her credit card and loses Rs 72 lakh


A 72-year-old woman from Kudappanakunnu, Kerala, has fallen prey to a sophisticated online scam, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs 72 lakh. The elaborate fraud involved scammers posing as officials from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who manipulated her into revealing sensitive banking information.

The scam unfolded on August 23 when the elderly woman received a call from someone pretending to be an RBI official. The caller informed her that her credit card had been blocked due to security concerns, prompting her to take immediate action. Shortly after, she received another call from an individual claiming to be a CBI officer. This second caller alleged that a money laundering case had been filed against her, intensifying her anxiety and fear.

As part of the scam, the victim was subjected to what is often referred to as "digital arrest." The scammers kept her online, maintaining constant communication through various channels, including video calls. They provided her with fake documents, such as a falsified First Information Report (FIR) and counterfeit papers supposedly from the Supreme Court of India and the RBI, to lend credibility to their scheme.

Under the guise of a serious investigation, the scammers coerced her into sharing her sensitive banking credentials. Believing these were necessary for resolving the alleged case, she complied. Once they had access to her bank details, the fraudsters swiftly siphoned off Rs 72 lakh from her accounts. They assured her that the funds would be returned, but soon after, all communication was severed, leaving her with no recourse.

This incident highlights the increasing targeting of elderly individuals in online scams, exploiting their often limited technological knowledge and heightened trust. To protect against such frauds, it is essential to educate elderly individuals about the risks of online scams. They should be advised to remain cautious and never disclose sensitive information to unsolicited callers.

It is crucial to verify the identity of anyone requesting personal or financial details. Genuine institutions like banks, the RBI, or the CBI will never ask for sensitive information over the phone. If a suspicious call is received, it is best to hang up and contact the institution directly using official contact numbers. Personal or financial information, including OTPs, card details, and bank credentials, should never be shared with anyone over the phone or online.

Scammers frequently use fear tactics, such as threats of legal action or arrest, to manipulate victims. Maintaining calm and consulting trusted sources before taking any action can help prevent falling victim to such schemes. If fraudulent activity is suspected, it should be reported immediately to the police and the bank to potentially minimize financial loss.

Awareness and vigilance are key defenses against online scams. Educating family members, particularly the elderly, about common fraud tactics and encouraging them to be cautious can significantly reduce their risk of becoming victims of such schemes.
