A lightning strike killed eight individuals, including six children, in Chhattisgarh


A tragic incident unfolded in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon area on Monday, resulting in the loss of eight lives, including six Class 11 students, due to a lightning strike. The group was caught in a severe downpour and sought refuge under a shed situated near a tree when disaster struck. The tree, unfortunately, was hit by lightning, leading to this devastating outcome, as confirmed by District Collector Sanjay Aggrawal.

These students were returning home after completing their examination, filled with the hopes and aspirations typical of their age. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM, highlighting the unpredictability and dangers of severe weather conditions. Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg stated that preliminary information revealed the tragic fate of the group, with eight fatalities and one individual sustaining injuries that required hospitalization. This sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly affecting the families and friends of the young victims.

In response to this heartbreaking tragedy, the Chhattisgarh state government announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh for the bereaved families of the deceased.
