According to Vinesh Phogat, those who are pleased with his Olympic defeat should face sedition charges. Additionally, a supporter in the stands received a pass

Vinesh Phogat's transition from a celebrated wrestler to a politician has drawn significant attention, particularly after her maiden political rally in Julana, Haryana. Phogat, who recently joined the Congress party on August 6, was named their candidate for the Julana constituency in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. During an interview with India Today TV, she fiercely addressed the derogatory remarks by former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who had accused her of failing to win an Olympic medal due to "divine punishment." Phogat did not hold back in her response, asserting that such statements reflected the "mentality" of BJP leaders. She condemned those who rejoiced in her Olympic loss, stating that they should be charged with sedition for disrespecting the country, as the medal she fought for was not just hers but represented India on the global stage.

Phogat also reacted to comments by former Haryana minister Anil Vij, who had referred to her as "Congress ki beti" (Congress’s daughter). In a bold retort, Phogat said, “I am the nation's daughter and will always remain one," distancing herself from any singular political identity. She further criticized the ruling BJP for their lack of support upon her return from the Paris Olympics. Despite being part of a celebratory roadshow, she noted that no BJP leader, including the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister, extended their congratulations or expressed solidarity with her struggles. Phogat suggested that the BJP’s social media statements of financial support were merely political gestures aimed at garnering votes.

The former wrestler also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to the Congress leadership for standing by her during difficult times, especially when she and other female wrestlers were fighting allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former Wrestling Federation of India chief. Phogat extended heartfelt thanks to Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and particularly to her "elder brother" Deepender Hooda for their guidance and unwavering support. According to Phogat, her decision to join politics aligns with her desire to work for the betterment of the country, with her key electoral promises focused on building a sports stadium, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring women's safety—issues she considers vital for the development of her constituency.

When asked about fellow wrestler Sakshee Malikkh’s remarks on her political entry, Phogat echoed the sentiment that it was a personal decision. However, she stressed that the unity between the wrestlers remained intact, and their collective fight against the systemic exploitation of women athletes was far from over. Phogat also criticized the BJP’s attempts to tamper with the investigation against Brij Bhushan Singh, accusing them of using money and muscle power to influence the legal process. Despite these challenges, she vowed to continue the battle in court, not just for herself but for every woman and female sportsperson who has been a victim of exploitation. Phogat's firm stance highlights her resolve to continue advocating for justice, even as she embarks on her new journey in politics, representing both the interests of her constituency and the larger cause of women's empowerment in sports and society.
