Severe heavy rain has led to widespread flooding and landslides across Andhra Pradesh, with the neighboring state of Telangana also on high alert as the impact of a depression in the Bay of Bengal continues. The torrential downpours have resulted in significant disruptions, loss of life, and extensive damage to infrastructure.
In Andhra Pradesh, at least eight fatalities have been reported due to rain-related incidents. Five of these deaths occurred in Mogalrajapuram, Vijayawada, where landslides triggered by the heavy rains caused large boulders to crash into homes. In Guntur district, a teacher and two students tragically lost their lives when their vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross an overflowing stream.
The affected regions in Andhra Pradesh include Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Kaikaluru, Narasapuram, Amaravati, Mangalagiri, Nandigama, and Bhimavaram. The relentless rain has led to the inundation of roads, properties, and a disruption of essential services. Several residents from low-lying areas have been evacuated, and around 80 individuals have been rescued from floodwaters by national and state disaster relief forces.
The flooding has also severely impacted train services. Train movements on the Vijayawada-Warangal route have been halted due to water submerging tracks near Vijayawada and disruptions caused by overflowing streams near Mahabubabad and Kesamudram railway stations. This has led to significant delays and cancellations of train services.
To address the crisis, the Andhra Pradesh government has set up a state-level control room for emergency response, working closely with disaster management agencies and the health department. Citizens are advised to contact the control room at +919032384168 for medical emergencies. A dedicated team, led by Dr. Subrahmanyeswari and Dr. MV Padmaja, will monitor emergency medical services until September 3.
The India Meteorological Department reports that the depression crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam early on September 1, with forecasts indicating continued northwestward movement across north Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The heavy rainfall is expected to persist, with warnings of potential flooding in several districts.
In Telangana, heavy rain has led to the inundation of low-lying areas and disruption of transportation. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed all government departments to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures. The state government has also initiated the opening of control rooms in district collector’s offices and Hyderabad to coordinate relief efforts and manage the evacuation of residents from flood-affected areas.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) has cautioned that river levels in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are anticipated to rise further in the coming days, exacerbating the flood situation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Hyderabad and Vijayawada to support ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Overall, the situation remains critical as both states grapple with the severe impact of the ongoing heavy rainfall and the subsequent flooding.
