Engineer Rashid comes out of jail, vowing to combat Modi's Naya Kashmir agenda

Engineer Rashid, the Baramulla MP and leader of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), has been granted interim bail by a Delhi court to campaign in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Rashid, who has been in Tihar Jail since 2019 for his alleged involvement in a terror funding case, was released under stringent conditions, including a prohibition on speaking to the media about the charges he faces. His release is valid until October 2, allowing him to engage with voters in his constituency and prepare for the crucial elections.

Upon his release, Rashid expressed his determination to fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Naya Kashmir," a term used by the central government to describe its plans for the region post the abrogation of Article 370. Rashid, who has been a vocal critic of the government's actions in Jammu and Kashmir, including the revocation of the state's special status, vowed to represent the aspirations of the people and challenge the narrative imposed by the central leadership. He asserted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have rejected the policies implemented since August 5, 2019, and promised to be a voice of resistance in the Assembly.

Rashid’s release comes at a critical time for the region, as the 2024 Assembly elections mark the first local elections in Jammu and Kashmir since it was reorganized into a Union Territory. The elections, scheduled to be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, have attracted significant political interest, with various parties vying for influence in the newly restructured political landscape. The results, expected on October 8, will be a litmus test for both local and national political players, as they gauge the mood of the people following years of political uncertainty.

Rashid’s AIP, which has a strong local presence, is set to contest the elections with a focus on restoring rights to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His release gives his party a timely boost, enabling them to ramp up their campaign efforts. Rashid’s return to the political stage is also significant because he was one of the few politicians to defeat a major political figure—former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah—in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, making him a key player in the current political scenario.

As Rashid navigates the conditions of his interim bail, which include a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and a surety of the same amount, his focus remains on the upcoming elections. His party aims to harness the discontent among voters, who have faced numerous challenges, including security concerns, political instability, and economic difficulties. The elections provide a platform for Rashid to present his vision for the future of Jammu and Kashmir, positioning himself and his party as champions of local interests against the broader policies of the central government.

The upcoming Assembly polls are expected to be highly competitive, with major national parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, as well as regional parties, all contesting for control of the legislature. Rashid’s presence in the race adds another layer of complexity, as his release from jail injects fresh momentum into the political dynamics of the region. With campaigning set to intensify, Rashid’s role will be closely watched as he seeks to galvanize support and challenge the narrative of "Naya Kashmir," making the 2024 Assembly elections a pivotal moment for Jammu and Kashmir's political future.
