Is iPhone 16 expensive? No, iPhone has actually become cheaper in India during the last four years

The pricing of the iPhone 16 in India presents an interesting case. Despite the general trend of increasing prices due to inflation, the iPhone 16 has been launched at a base price of Rs 79,900, which is the same as the iPhone 12's launch price in 2020. This price stability is notable given the context of inflationary pressures, which have typically driven up costs for most products.

In practical terms, this means that the iPhone 16 is effectively cheaper in real terms than the iPhone 12, considering the average annual inflation rate of around 6% over the past four years. If Apple had adjusted the price in line with inflation, the iPhone 16 would have cost approximately Rs 1,05,000. Therefore, maintaining the same price point suggests that Apple has managed to offset inflationary impacts, possibly through efficient cost management or adjustments in its supply chain.

One factor contributing to this stability could be Apple's increased manufacturing presence in India. Since 2020, Apple has ramped up its local production of iPhones, which may have led to reduced costs related to import duties and taxes. This local production could be helping Apple keep its prices steady while maintaining profit margins.

Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models also reflect a price reduction compared to their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at Rs 1,19,900, which is Rs 15,000 less than the iPhone 15 Pro's launch price, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,44,900, which is Rs 15,000 lower than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This significant reduction aligns with the increased local manufacturing of these Pro models in India, further suggesting that localized production may be a key factor in controlling prices.

Overall, Apple's strategy to maintain or even reduce prices while dealing with inflation and increasing production costs is a testament to its ability to adapt and manage its operations effectively. For Indian consumers, this means the iPhone 16 represents a relatively more affordable option compared to other high-end smartphones available in the market.
