Israeli strikes kill 492 in Lebanon; Hezbollah fires 200 rockets in retaliation

The escalation of tensions between Israel and Hezbollah has triggered widespread fears of an all-out war in the region, particularly following the resurgence of the Gaza conflict that began on October 7 last year. Recent developments have seen a dramatic increase in violence, with Israel launching intensive strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, resulting in significant casualties. 

On Monday, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, leading to a devastating toll of 492 deaths, including many women and children, according to the Lebanese health ministry. This represents the deadliest day of cross-border conflict since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war and has raised alarms across the international community. In retaliation, Hezbollah fired nearly 200 rockets into northern Israel, triggering rocket sirens in cities such as Haifa, Afula, and Nazareth. The Iran-backed group claimed these attacks were aimed at various Israeli military bases and airfields.

The situation has prompted tens of thousands of residents to flee from southern Lebanon toward the capital, Beirut, as the Israeli military reported striking 1,600 Hezbollah targets in a concerted effort to suppress the group's capabilities. This latest round of violence marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly a year. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the military operations are intended to change the security balance along the northern border, while IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi indicated that the military is preparing for subsequent phases in the conflict. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) shared images of long-range rockets allegedly housed in civilian areas in Lebanon, claiming that these were among 1,300 targets struck during the recent operations.

In a statement reflecting the U.S. administration's position, President Joe Biden emphasized that efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation. A State Department spokesperson reiterated America's commitment to defend its allies in the region, while the Pentagon announced plans to deploy additional troops to the Middle East as a precautionary measure. 

Israel had previously issued warnings to civilians in Beirut and other Lebanese areas to evacuate their homes, particularly those near Hezbollah weapon caches, indicating a serious concern for civilian safety amidst the intensifying conflict. This evacuation notice came in the wake of explosions involving Hezbollah’s communication devices across Lebanon last week.

The international response to the unfolding crisis has been swift. France has requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the situation, while Egypt has called on international powers and the United Nations to intervene. Turkey warned that Israel's aggressive actions could plunge the entire region into chaos. In a charged statement, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused Israel of deliberately setting traps to provoke a larger conflict in the Middle East, highlighting the fraught nature of regional dynamics.

In light of these escalating tensions, EgyptAir announced the suspension of flights to and from Beirut, citing the current unstable conditions. Jordan has also halted all flights to the Lebanese capital until further notice, reflecting the pervasive sense of insecurity that has enveloped the region.
