Johnny Depp to get a lifetime achievement award and screen Modi at the Rome Film Festival

Johnny Depp is set to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 19th edition of the Rome Film Festival, running from October 16 to 27, 2024. This recognition comes at a pivotal time in Depp's career, as he marks his return to directing with his latest project, *Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness*. The film, a biopic centered around the life of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, showcases Depp’s re-entry into the director’s chair after a lengthy 27-year hiatus. His previous directorial venture, *The Brave* (1997), faced critical and commercial failure, making *Modi* a highly anticipated comeback for the actor-director.

*Modi* features Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio in the role of Modigliani, a rebellious and groundbreaking artist known for his modernist portraits and nudes that redefined early 20th-century art. The film, which will premiere in the Grand Public section of the Rome Film Festival, offers a glimpse into a crucial three-day period in the artist’s life. During this time, Modigliani is on the run from the police while battling personal turmoil, and his desire to abandon his art career and leave Paris is complicated by his relationships with fellow artists Maurice Utrillo and Chaim Soutine, as well as his muse, Beatrice Hastings. The film explores the chaotic inner world of Modigliani, heightened by a night of hallucinations, and culminates in a pivotal encounter with American art collector Maurice Gangnat, portrayed by the legendary Al Pacino.

In addition to Scamarcio and Pacino, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Antonia Desplat, Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery from *The White Lotus*, Ryan McParland from *Halo*, and Sally Phillips of *Bridget Jones's Diary* fame. Each actor brings to life figures from Modigliani’s circle, reflecting the vibrant and often tumultuous art scene of early 20th-century Paris. The dynamic between Modigliani and his art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski adds another layer of complexity to the film, illustrating the artist's struggle to reconcile his chaotic mind with the pressures of creating art in a rapidly changing world.

*Modi* not only serves as a showcase for Depp’s directorial talent but also represents a major milestone in his career, following his 2022 legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp’s defamation lawsuit, which made headlines around the world, culminated in a victory for the actor, clearing his name from allegations of domestic abuse. With this high-profile court case behind him, *Modi* marks his first significant film project, signaling a new chapter in his career. His return to directing reflects his ambition to craft a compelling narrative about a lesser-known figure in the art world, one whose legacy is now receiving renewed attention.

The film will later be released in Italy, with Be Water collaborating with Maestro Distribution and Medusa Film for its Italian release. The story of Amedeo Modigliani, long overshadowed by his contemporaries, is expected to resonate with audiences worldwide, particularly those fascinated by the struggles and triumphs of artists who pushed the boundaries of their time.

Depp's decision to direct *Modi* highlights his deepening interest in the complex lives of misunderstood artists, while the recognition of his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Festival underscores his enduring impact on global cinema. Depp’s fans, who have long admired his ability to portray eccentric and deeply layered characters, will now see him take on a different kind of creative challenge, directing a film that intertwines themes of artistic genius, madness, and personal struggle.

The Rome Film Festival's decision to honor Depp with such a distinguished award further types of cement his status as one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures. This festival appearance, paired with the world premiere of *Modi*, is set to be a key highlight of his career, solidifying his place both behind and in front of the camera, as he steps back into the world of filmmaking with renewed vigor and purpose.
