Praveen Kumar wins India's record-breaking sixth gold in the Paris Paralympics

Praveen Kumar has etched his name into the annals of Paralympic history with a stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where he clinched the gold medal in the men's high jump T64 event. His remarkable leap of 2.08 meters not only secured him the top spot but also marked his second consecutive Paralympic medal. Praveen had previously won silver at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, achieving a personal best of 2.07 meters, showcasing a consistent upward trajectory in his career.

At just 21 years old, Praveen, hailing from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, became only the second Indian high jumper to win gold in Paralympic history, following Mariyappan Thangavelu. This victory is particularly notable as it adds to India's medal tally at the Paris Paralympics, which now stands at 26 medals—comprising six gold, nine silver, and 11 bronze. The event also saw Derek Loccident from the United States secure silver with a jump of 2.06 meters, while Uzbekistan's Temurbek Giyazov took bronze with a 2.03-meter jump.

Praveen's journey to the top has been a testament to his resilience and determination. Born in Govindgarh, Noida, with a shorter leg, he initially faced challenges and struggled with feelings of inadequacy. His entry into the world of sports was driven by a desire to overcome these insecurities, starting with volleyball before discovering his passion for high jump.

The pivotal moment came when he competed in a high jump event at an able-bodied athletics competition, realizing the potential for athletes with disabilities. Under the guidance of Dr. Satyapal Singh, a para-athletics coach, Praveen shifted his focus to the high jump. This decision proved transformative, leading him to win a gold medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games with a record-breaking jump of 2.05 meters.

Praveen's accomplishments extend beyond the Paralympics. He earned a silver medal at the 2019 World Para Athletics Junior Championship in Nottwil, Switzerland, and a gold at the 2021 World Para Athletics FAZZA Grand Prix in Dubai, where he set an Asian record. His recent bronze medal at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championship further solidified his status as a leading athlete in his category and secured his qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Praveen Kumar's achievements not only highlight his exceptional athletic talent but also reflect his unwavering commitment and perseverance, serving as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes worldwide.
