Putin calls PM a 'wonderful buddy' and asks him for a meeting on the margins of the BRICS conference

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended a personal and formal invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proposing a separate meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, which will be held in Kazan, Russia. Putin's gesture underscores the strong diplomatic ties between India and Russia. In his discussions with India's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, Putin praised Modi as a "great friend," reflecting the deepening partnership between the two nations.

During their talks in St Petersburg, which were part of a larger conclave of national security advisors from BRICS countries, Putin emphasized the significance of Modi's attendance at the summit. He specifically proposed that the additional meeting take place on October 22, expressing his hope that Modi would make the journey to Kazan.

The invitation from Putin also came in the context of ongoing efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. NSA Doval briefed Putin on his recent interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, highlighting India's role in the international diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the crisis. The meeting between Doval and Putin was part of renewed diplomatic endeavors to find a solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, showcasing the collaborative efforts of BRICS nations in tackling global challenges.

Putin's invitation reflects the enduring and evolving relationship between India and Russia, which has been marked by cooperation on various fronts including economic, strategic, and geopolitical issues. The BRICS summit, which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is expected to address a range of global issues, and Modi's participation is seen as a critical component in strengthening multilateral ties within the group.
