Sandip Ghosh's aides face charges of threatening junior doctors

A significant controversy has unfolded at Kolkata Medical College, where a wave of complaints has been filed by junior doctors against Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, Dr. Avik De, and Dr. Ranjit Saha. These three individuals were prominent aides to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The junior doctors have accused these aides of threatening and intimidating them, with at least 46 separate complaints detailing these alleged threats.

The serious allegations against Dr. Biswas, Dr. De, and Dr. Saha come in the wake of a broader scandal involving their former boss, Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh was recently arrested on charges of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a situation that has been exacerbated by the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the facility. This incident has led to massive protests and has significantly tarnished the hospital's reputation.

Sandip Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until his transfer in October 2023. Despite his transfer, Ghosh managed to return to his position within a month, raising concerns about the administrative and oversight mechanisms within the institution. The discovery of the trainee doctor’s semi-naked body in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9 has further fueled the crisis, spotlighting severe lapses in the hospital’s operations and management.

The current situation at Kolkata Medical College reflects a troubling pattern of intimidation and misconduct, which has only intensified the ongoing scrutiny of both RG Kar Medical College and the individuals involved. The FIR against Dr. Biswas, Dr. De, and Dr. Saha is part of a larger investigation into the alleged corruption and mismanagement that has plagued the institution. This development underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms and accountability within medical and administrative frameworks to address the deep-seated issues at these institutions.
