The Centre gives Ayushman health insurance coverage to everybody above 70

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, following the Union Cabinet meeting, revealed a crucial expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) aimed at benefiting senior citizens across the country. Under this new provision, all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income levels, will receive health coverage amounting to Rs 5 lakh. This policy is set to benefit approximately six crore senior citizens from 4.5 crore families. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to ensure comprehensive healthcare access to all segments of society, particularly the elderly, who often face increased health risks.

The coverage provides not only basic health insurance but also a significant top-up of Rs 5 lakh for families with senior citizens who are already covered under the AB PM-JAY. This additional support is designed to relieve families of the financial burden that often accompanies the treatment of age-related health issues, including critical illnesses that require extensive medical care. Eligible senior citizens will receive a distinct new card, ensuring easy access to healthcare services under this scheme.

The decision comes at a time when the healthcare needs of India’s elderly population are rapidly increasing. With rising life expectancy, a growing number of senior citizens need advanced medical care, making this expanded coverage crucial for millions of families. The government’s effort will not only safeguard the health of older individuals but also provide financial relief to families grappling with the costs of chronic and acute medical conditions.

Moreover, senior citizens who are currently availing of other public health insurance schemes such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) schemes will have the option to choose between their existing coverage or the new AB PM-JAY benefits. This flexibility allows for greater customization of healthcare coverage, ensuring that each senior citizen can select the scheme that best meets their individual needs.

The introduction of this expanded healthcare coverage signifies a pivotal moment in India's healthcare system, placing a strong emphasis on ensuring that the elderly population receives the care they deserve without financial obstacles. It also highlights the government's commitment to building a more inclusive and robust healthcare framework that addresses the growing demands of an aging population. This development, combined with other health reforms under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, reflects the ongoing transformation of India’s healthcare landscape, striving to make healthcare accessible, affordable, and comprehensive for all, particularly for its most vulnerable citizens.
