The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for Aadhaar holders to update their details online free of charge until December 14, 2024. This extension, which marks the second extension since the initial deadline of June 14, 2024, provides an additional 90 days for citizens to ensure their Aadhaar information remains current and accurate. While updating details online remains free, any updates involving biometric information at Aadhaar centers will still incur a fee.
Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identification number, has become an essential document for every Indian resident. It serves multiple functions, from verifying identity and address to facilitating access to various government schemes, opening bank accounts, booking travel tickets, and filing income taxes. As Aadhaar's significance grows, so does the potential for misuse and fraud. By maintaining up-to-date Aadhaar details, the government can better manage records and address fraud.
The Indian government recommends that Aadhaar holders update their details every ten years to ensure the accuracy of their demographic and biometric information. This practice helps in avoiding delays in service delivery and ensures that public schemes and benefits reach the intended recipients. Accurate Aadhaar details are crucial for smooth verification in various processes, including financial transactions, educational admissions, and travel bookings.
Updating Aadhaar details online is a straightforward process that can be completed from home. To begin, users should visit the Aadhaar Self-Service Portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. They need to log in using their Aadhaar number and a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to their registered mobile number. Once logged in, users can review their current identity and address details. If any information is incorrect or outdated, they can proceed to update it.
Users are required to upload scanned copies of documents proving their identity or address. Accepted formats include JPEG, PNG, and PDF, with a file size limit of 2 MB. After submitting the update request, users will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the status of their update.
Biometric updates, such as changes to fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs, must be done in person at a UIDAI-authorised Aadhaar center. It is also advised to update Aadhaar details for children every ten years or as they turn fifteen to include their updated biometric information.
For biometric updates, one should visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment center with the child, fill out the Aadhaar enrolment form, and provide the child's biometric data or photograph if they are under five years old. Fees will apply for these biometric updates.
By ensuring that Aadhaar details are accurate and current, citizens contribute to the efficient delivery of public services and benefits and help minimize the risk of fraud.
