A man was arrested for threatening doctors on duty at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital

A man named Satya Ranjan Mahapatra was arrested by Kolkata police following an altercation with on-duty doctors at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident took place around 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday when Mahapatra arrived at the hospital’s Trauma Care unit, accompanying Sikhar, a person who had been injured in a road accident and was in need of urgent medical attention.

The situation quickly escalated when Mahapatra, growing impatient with what he believed was a delay in Sikhar’s treatment, allegedly began verbally abusing the medical staff. According to hospital sources, Mahapatra not only hurled abusive language at the doctors but also issued death threats in a moment of anger. The hospital, which had already been in the spotlight due to the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor, became the scene of yet another distressing episode.

As tensions rose, police officers stationed at the hospital swiftly intervened, detaining Mahapatra before the situation could further escalate. Despite this, Sikhar was transferred to another hospital for further treatment. 

Following the incident, the hospital’s principal lodged a formal complaint at Tala Police Station and based on this complaint, an FIR was registered against Mahapatra. Police soon arrested him for allegedly threatening the doctors and disrupting the hospital’s functioning.

During his interrogation, Mahapatra provided a different account of events. He admitted to having a heated argument with the doctors, acknowledging that he had "misbehaved" due to the stress and urgency of the situation. However, he denied having issued any death threats to the doctors, claiming that his actions were impulsive and driven by frustration over the perceived delay in Sikhar's care. Mahapatra expressed regret over his behavior, stating that it was a result of being overwhelmed in the "heat of the moment." Nonetheless, his behavior led to serious legal consequences, and the police are continuing to investigate the incident. 

The incident adds to the string of recent controversies surrounding the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has been under public scrutiny following the shocking rape and murder of a trainee doctor. This latest episode has further spotlighted the mounting pressures faced by medical staff at the institution, raising concerns about both patient care and security for healthcare workers.
