The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has placed the blame squarely on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for the violent clashes in Jalalabad, Punjab, where an AAP leader was seriously injured in a shooting incident. Mandeep Singh Brar, the AAP candidate for the upcoming panchayat elections, sustained critical bullet injuries to his chest during the altercation. The shooting occurred during a meeting related to the polls at the Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) office, where Brar was filing his nomination papers for the Sarpanch elections.
Brar's condition remains critical, and he is currently undergoing treatment in a Ludhiana hospital. Punjab Panchayati Raj Minister Tarunpreet Singh Saundh visited him in the hospital and expressed his deep concern over the incident, labeling it "shameful" and a reflection of the SAD's attempt to undermine the democratic process. In his statement, the minister said, "Brar was only fulfilling his democratic right by contesting the elections. The use of violence to intimidate him and other AAP candidates shows how threatened our rivals feel by the growing support for our party." Saundh went on to accuse both the Akali Dal and Congress of trying to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in Punjab ahead of the elections, resorting to violence to suppress opposition candidates.
Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy, AAP’s MLA from Jalalabad, who was present at the BDPO office when the shooting took place, provided more insight into the tensions that led to the violence. He explained that the altercation began over a longstanding land dispute involving Panchayat land that had been illegally occupied by a member of the Akali Dal. This land dispute had been contested in the High Court, and Brar had raised objections to the nomination papers of the Akali Dal candidate on this basis. According to Kamboj, the Akali Dal supporters became aggressive after Brar’s objections, leading to a confrontation where they reportedly said, "Who are you to challenge our nomination?" The situation quickly escalated, culminating in Brar being shot by a member of the Akali Dal using a licensed firearm.
The violent incident has sparked heightened political tensions in Jalalabad and across the Fazilka district, with senior police officers immediately arriving on the scene to control the situation and ensure that the conflict does not spiral further out of control. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have been tasked with identifying all involved parties to bring those responsible to justice.
The shooting comes at a critical juncture, just as Punjab is gearing up for its panchayat elections, scheduled for October 15. With 13,229 gram panchayats going to the polls, this election is seen as a major battleground for the AAP, Akali Dal, and Congress, each of whom is vying for control over local governance in key areas. The violence in Jalalabad has raised concerns about the potential for further clashes in other parts of the state as election day draws closer, leading to calls for increased security measures to ensure a free and fair voting process.
AAP leaders have condemned the shooting, accusing their political rivals of trying to instill fear among AAP supporters and disrupt their campaign efforts. Many in the party have pointed to this incident as a broader reflection of the challenges faced by AAP in contesting elections in areas traditionally dominated by the Akali Dal and Congress. The party has called for stricter measures to safeguard its candidates, stressing that violence and intimidation tactics should not be allowed to undermine democracy.
On social media, AAP supporters and leaders have voiced their anger, sharing posts and comments calling for justice for Mandeep Singh Brar. The incident has also drawn attention from the national media, with debates about the growing violence in local elections and the need for stronger action to prevent such incidents in the future.
As investigations continue, Punjab's law enforcement agencies are under pressure to ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable. Political observers are closely watching the developments in Jalalabad, with concerns that this could set the tone for an increasingly tense and violent election season in Punjab. Both the AAP and SAD have issued statements urging their supporters to remain calm and let the law take its course, though tensions in the region remain high.
