Elon Musk's X is ordered by an Australian court to pay a $418,000 fine for child abuse


Elon Musk's social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), has recently been ordered by an Australian court to pay a substantial fine of A$610,500 (approximately $418,000) as a direct consequence of its failure to adequately oversee and manage child exploitation content. This ruling, reported by Reuters, was upheld by the Federal Court of Australia and stems from X's inability to comply with a request from the eSafety Commissioner regarding the platform's measures for addressing child sexual exploitation materials.

In its defense, X challenged the imposition of the fine, arguing that due to a corporate restructuring that occurred in 2022—when Twitter transitioned into Musk's new entity, X Corp—it was no longer obligated to respond to regulatory demands made before this significant change. However, the court dismissed this argument firmly, emphasizing that allowing such a precedent could have grave implications for regulatory oversight of foreign companies operating within Australia. The eSafety Commissioner underscored the importance of holding companies accountable, indicating that accepting X's position could potentially open a loophole for corporations to evade their legal responsibilities following mergers or acquisitions, thereby undermining efforts to protect users from harmful content.
