In a series of pre-election welfare initiatives, the Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has announced a Diwali bonus of Rs 28,000 for all employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This gesture is aimed at providing a financial boost during the festive season, and it marks an increase of Rs 3,000 from last year’s bonus. The bonus is part of a broader strategy by the government to offer economic relief to various sections of society, particularly as the state gears up for crucial elections on November 20.
The announcement came just minutes before the Election Commission of India declared the official dates for the state assembly polls, which triggered the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The timing of these welfare schemes, particularly the Diwali bonus, appears to be a calculated move to win over key voter groups ahead of the elections.
In addition to the BMC bonus, the Maharashtra government has launched the Ladki Bahin Yojana Diwali Bonus 2024 program. Under this scheme, eligible women from economically weaker sections will receive Rs 3,000, which includes the 4th and 5th instalments of monthly financial aid, credited directly into their bank accounts as a festive bonus. Women whose annual family income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh are eligible for this scheme, which provides Rs 1,500 in monthly assistance to help alleviate economic hardship.
The ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), BJP, and other allies, has been unveiling a series of welfare measures in recent months. These include not only the Diwali bonuses but also initiatives aimed at various vulnerable segments of society, such as the elderly, youth, and women. The government’s focus on providing financial support, especially in light of the upcoming elections, highlights its efforts to sway public opinion and ensure a favorable outcome at the polls.
On the transportation front, Chief Minister Shinde also made a significant announcement by abolishing toll charges for light motor vehicles entering Mumbai. Additionally, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) cancelled its proposed 10% fare hike, further underscoring the government's commitment to making life more affordable for citizens, particularly in the run-up to the elections.
These developments come as the Mahayuti alliance prepares for a tough electoral battle against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which has already demonstrated its strength in the state. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the MVA secured a decisive victory, winning 31 out of Maharashtra’s 48 parliamentary seats. The upcoming state elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with both sides vying for dominance.
The welfare schemes, including the Diwali bonus for BMC employees and financial assistance for women, are likely to resonate with key voter demographics.
