Maharashtra votes on November 20 and Jharkhand on November 13, 20

The Election Commission of India has officially announced the dates for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, marking a crucial moment in the political landscape of both states. Maharashtra will witness its election in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand will hold its elections in two phases, on November 13 and November 20. The much-anticipated results for both states will be declared on November 23, following the counting of votes.

In Maharashtra, the electoral contest is shaping up to be a high-stakes battle between two major alliances. The ruling Mahyuti alliance, which includes Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), will face off against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The MVA consists of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), the Congress, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction. The political dynamics in Maharashtra have been fluid since the 2019 assembly elections, where the BJP emerged as the largest party with 105 out of 288 seats, while its then-ally, the Shiv Sena, secured 56 seats. Despite their comfortable majority, a power struggle over the Chief Minister’s post led to the breakup of the alliance. The Shiv Sena, under Uddhav Thackeray, ultimately formed a government with the Congress and the NCP, and Thackeray was sworn in as Chief Minister under the MVA banner.

However, the situation has dramatically shifted since then, with Eknath Shinde leading a faction of the Shiv Sena to align with the BJP, and Ajit Pawar breaking ranks with Sharad Pawar’s NCP. These developments have created new political alignments and significantly altered the pre-election landscape in Maharashtra. The upcoming polls are expected to be a litmus test for the strength of these new alliances, and the state's political future hangs in the balance.

In Jharkhand, the election is also set to be fiercely contested, with the INDIA bloc, comprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), defending its position against the BJP, which is eager to reclaim power in the state. In the 2019 Jharkhand assembly elections, the JMM-led alliance achieved a decisive victory, winning 47 out of 81 seats, with the JMM emerging as the largest party with 30 seats. The Congress secured 16 seats, while the RJD claimed 1 seat. The BJP, which was the incumbent party before the election, managed to win only 25 seats, losing its grip on power. Hemant Soren, leader of the JMM, was sworn in as Chief Minister following this victory.

This time around, Chief Minister Hemant Soren faces significant challenges, particularly due to corruption allegations in connection with a land scam case. These accusations have complicated his re-election campaign and may influence voter sentiment as the election approaches. The BJP, which has been the main opposition party in the state, is expected to capitalize on these controversies to regain control.

Both Maharashtra and Jharkhand are set for highly competitive elections, with key issues, alliances, and leadership choices at the forefront of the campaigns. The results on November 23 will not only determine the leadership in these states but will also offer insight into broader national political trends, as both contests are seen as indicators of public sentiment leading up to the 2024 general elections.
