Rohit Sharma has urged India to go out and do the work for him. Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble has expressed high regard for Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, emphasizing how the Indian skipper has successfully inspired his players to unite and deliver strong performances on the field. Under Rohit's leadership, India currently occupies the top position in the World Test Championship standings, showcasing a promising path toward a potential final appearance. This year, Rohit has led the team through a commendable run, highlighted by a dominant 4-1 series victory over England, followed by a convincing 2-0 win against Bangladesh. This strong performance reflects Rohit’s effective captaincy and his ability to motivate the team to perform at their best.

In the concluding match of the Bangladesh series, Rohit played a pivotal role as India shattered several records during their rain-affected Test in Kanpur. Kumble, speaking to JioCinema, praised Rohit for his tactical brilliance and his adeptness at managing the plethora of world-class talent within the Indian squad. He noted that Rohit has made smart decisions that not only capitalize on the strengths of his players but also adapt to the dynamics of each match situation, which is crucial in Test cricket.

Kumble stated, "Tactically, he's been brilliant in terms of being proactive in a Test match with the kind of resources that he has. He's been blessed to have that kind of resources with two world-class spinners and Bumrah, who you can literally throw the ball in the first over or in the 80th over; he'll come and do all his tricks. He is a world-class bowler, and to have that kind of resource, he's been blessed." This acknowledgment of Rohit’s strategic acumen highlights the importance of having experienced players in the squad who can make significant contributions at crucial moments.

He went on to highlight Rohit’s exceptional ability to guide younger players through their roles in the team. Kumble pointed out the positive impact Rohit has had on emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has thrived as an opening batter under his captaincy. "Shubman Gill, of course, has had to move from one and two to three, which he has again done comfortably well here. KL Rahul has been moved up and down. That has again sat really well. It's great to have Rishabh Pant back, and Virat, you know, at number four has done brilliantly under Rohit as well," Kumble remarked. The flexibility in player roles under Rohit’s captaincy demonstrates his understanding of the game and the strengths of his players, enabling them to perform effectively.

Kumble also emphasized Rohit’s skill in rallying the team around him, ensuring they remain focused on achieving their objectives during matches. He mentioned, "To have all those resources. And we saw that even in the England series, where he didn't have the services of Virat and Pant, and he had to manage with the younger lot. With Dhruv Jurel coming in and playing that match-winning knock and to come back from one-nil, I think that shows the leadership." This ability to adapt and succeed despite challenges speaks volumes about Rohit’s leadership qualities.

Even during challenging circumstances, Rohit’s influence has been apparent. Kumble noted that although Rohit may not have scored heavily in those matches, his leadership inspired the team to secure victories. "It's not that, you know, he's been scoring heavily. He's got the team to rally around and ensure that they still go on to win the last two Test matches. He didn't really score much with his bat, but he has inspired his team to go there and do the job for him," Kumble emphasized. This sentiment underlines the idea that leadership is not just about personal performance; it is also about fostering a winning culture and encouraging others to rise to the occasion.

Under Rohit's captaincy, India has played 18 Test matches, winning 12 and boasting an impressive win percentage of 66.66. This achievement underscores Rohit’s effectiveness as a leader, capable of navigating the complexities of international cricket while fostering a sense of unity and purpose among his teammates. With the Indian team on a positive trajectory, Kumble’s praise highlights the significant role Rohit plays in steering the team toward success as they aim to cement their status in the global cricketing arena.

As the cricketing world continues to watch closely, the upcoming matches will be crucial in determining whether Rohit Sharma can maintain this momentum and lead India to further glory in the Test format. His leadership style, marked by a focus on collaboration and encouragement, may very well prove to be the key ingredient in India’s pursuit of excellence on the international stage. Rohit’s ability to balance tactical decisions with emotional intelligence, motivating his players and creating an atmosphere conducive to success, sets a strong foundation for the team's future endeavors.

In addition to his strategic and inspirational qualities, Rohit's captaincy has also been characterized by a strong emphasis on building team spirit and cohesion. Kumble's insights suggest that Rohit has cultivated an environment where players feel valued and empowered, allowing them to express themselves freely on the field. This approach not only boosts individual confidence but also enhances team dynamics, enabling players to work together harmoniously toward a common goal. As Rohit continues to lead the Indian cricket team, his captaincy will be pivotal in shaping the next generation of cricketers and ensuring that India remains a formidable force in international cricket for years to come.
