Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav found himself embroiled in a significant controversy after allegedly using a derogatory term when questioned about Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s remarks on the Ayodhya dispute. CJI Chandrachud had previously shared that he had "prayed to God" for a peaceful solution to the long-standing Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case before delivering the historic verdict. When reporters asked Yadav for his reaction to this remark, he made an offensive comment, sparking widespread outrage. However, after the backlash, Yadav denied ever making any disrespectful statement about the CJI, claiming that he had been misquoted.
In his initial outburst, Yadav seemed to belittle CJI Chandrachud's faith-based approach to resolving the Ayodhya dispute, stating that such remarks were not worth his attention. However, when pressed for clarification amidst rising criticism, Yadav quickly backtracked, asserting that he had not been asked anything about the Chief Justice and had, in fact, been responding to a question about violence in Bahraich. He told the media, “Nobody asked me anything about the CJI. The Chief Justice is a very respected person. The controversy also prompted a reaction from Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party and Ram Gopal Yadav’s nephew. Akhilesh distanced himself from his uncle’s remarks, maintaining that he was unaware of the comments but reiterated his party’s respect for the judiciary and the Chief Justice of India. “We all respect the CJI,” Akhilesh said in a brief statement, signaling an effort to contain the fallout from the incident.
The uproar began after Chief Justice Chandrachud made heartfelt remarks regarding his involvement in adjudicating the Ayodhya case. Reflecting on the spiritual and moral challenges posed by the case, the CJI explained that during the three months in which the court deliberated on the matter, he turned to his faith for guidance. He said, "I sat before the deity and told him he needed to find a solution. Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way." His remarks resonated with many, as they highlighted the deeply personal and ethical dimensions of delivering justice in such a historically charged case.
The Ayodhya dispute, which lasted for several decades, revolved around claims that the 16th-century Babri Masjid had been built after demolishing a Hindu temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram.
