Ratan Tata, a towering figure in Indian industry and philanthropy, passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind an indelible legacy that transcended the business world. His death on Wednesday prompted the Maharashtra government to declare a day of mourning on Thursday, as a mark of respect for his contributions to the nation. Government offices in the state observed the solemn occasion by flying the tricolour at half-mast, and all scheduled state events were canceled as a tribute to the revered leader.
Tata’s body was kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point, Mumbai, allowing the public to pay their final respects from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Hundreds of people, including top businessmen, dignitaries, and ordinary citizens whose lives were touched by Tata’s visionary leadership and philanthropy, gathered to bid him a final farewell. His remains were then transported to the Worli crematorium for the last rites, where a state funeral was accorded to honor his extraordinary life.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, representing the central government, attended the funeral alongside other prominent figures such as Union Minister Piyush Goyal, as well as leading industrialists, including members of the Ambani family. Their presence underscored the profound respect Ratan Tata commanded, both in the political sphere and within the business community.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid glowing tributes to Tata, praising his remarkable combination of entrepreneurial genius and moral leadership. Shinde called him a "living legend" whose stewardship of the Tata Group brought unprecedented growth while upholding the highest standards of integrity. Shinde further emphasized Tata’s courage and decisiveness, which helped elevate the Tata conglomerate into a global industrial powerhouse.Â
Deepak Kesarkar, Maharashtra’s state minister, echoed similar sentiments, remarking on the profound loss to the state and the country. He confirmed that all government programs scheduled for Thursday were canceled as a mark of respect for Tata’s memory.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his deep sorrow at Tata’s passing, highlighting his extraordinary vision as a business leader and his profound humanity. Modi reflected on Tata’s ability to dream big while staying grounded in compassion and service to society. He praised Tata’s leadership in transforming one of India’s oldest business houses, the Tata Group, and emphasized his commitment to uplifting society through his charitable work. Modi described Tata as a "compassionate soul" who, despite his vast success, remained deeply committed to the well-being of others.
Ratan Tata’s legacy extends far beyond the corporate world. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded its global footprint, acquiring major international brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea. However, it was his commitment to philanthropy, education, and social causes that truly set him apart. His initiatives in healthcare, rural development, and education, often spearheaded through the Tata Trusts, touched millions of lives across India. His leadership, characterized by a rare blend of business acumen and social responsibility, earned him admiration in India and worldwide.
As India mourns the loss of this extraordinary figure, the outpouring of tributes reflects the deep impact Ratan Tata had on the nation. From business magnates to ordinary citizens, the nation has come together to remember a man whose vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place will continue to inspire generations to come.
