Suriya on Meiyazhagan's box office performance: I made a 25% profit

While promoting *Kanguva*, Suriya opened up about his vision for Indian cinema and addressed the reception of his latest production, *Meiyazhagan*. Although the film had only moderate box office results, it has received critical acclaim for its depth and social relevance. In an interview with *The Hollywood Reporter India*, Suriya brushed aside the industry’s fixation on box office performance, revealing he made a 25% profit on the project—well beyond his original 10% target—despite it being perceived as a smaller financial success. "Success," he explained, "isn’t solely about money. It’s about creating cinema that resonates on an emotional and intellectual level with audiences.”

Suriya highlighted *Meiyazhagan* as a project close to his heart, referring to it as "contemporary literature" for its exploration of modern values, ethics, and cultural shifts. He believes that films should reflect society and address real issues, likening them to social mirrors rather than just sources of entertainment. His comments challenge the industry's fixation on blockbuster success, stating, “Just because something is priced at Rs 1000 doesn’t mean it’s inherently valuable. What matters is whether it benefits and satisfies audiences.”

The film, directed by C Prem Kumar with support from advisor TJ Gnanavel, has drawn praise for the compelling performances of actors Karthi and Arvind Swamy, who Suriya believes brought authenticity and nuance to their roles. For Suriya, *Meiyazhagan* is a meaningful counterbalance to the commercial thrill of *Kanguva*, a high-stakes project directed by Siruthai Siva set to release on November 14. Through his production company, 2D Entertainment, co-founded with his wife Jyotika, Suriya remains committed to producing socially impactful films alongside blockbuster ventures.

While he immerses himself in the *Kanguva* promotional campaign, Jyotika has wrapped her role in the upcoming *Dabba Cartel*, underscoring the couple’s shared dedication to bringing diverse stories to Indian cinema. As Suriya continues to challenge industry norms, he aims to redefine what makes a film successful, prioritizing emotional impact and meaningful content over sheer financial gain.
