On Sunday, numerous members of the Christian community took to the streets, vocally demanding the arrest of Velingkar due to his controversial statements. Protesters not only demanded action against Velingkar but also urged like-minded individuals to assemble in Margao city, located in South Goa, to amplify their demonstration. This call to action resulted in late Saturday's protests, during which a group of demonstrators blocked a national highway in Margao, leading to confrontations with police forces. In the midst of these tensions, law enforcement detained five protesters, highlighting the urgency and intensity of the situation as it unfolded.
Political figures, including Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, have voiced strong criticisms regarding the handling of this incident by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gandhi condemned the BJP for what he termed as “deliberately stoking communal tensions” within the state. He expressed concern that Goa’s long-standing social harmony is “under attack” under the governance of the BJP, which he accused of fostering an environment conducive to communal discord. In a pointed tweet, he described how the BJP’s actions, including those of a former RSS leader provoking Christians and Sangh organizations calling for an economic boycott of Muslims, reflect a larger pattern of divisive politics. The Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), which serves as the social work wing of the Archdiocese of Goa, also issued a statement addressing the turmoil. The council condemned Velingkar’s remarks as “insulting and derogatory,” highlighting that his statements have deeply wounded the religious sentiments of Catholics and other faith communities who honor St. Francis Xavier. The council underscored that many individuals, regardless of their religious affiliation, attribute personal favours and miraculous events to the saint, making Velingkar’s comments particularly offensive. They called for protesters to exercise restraint to preserve peace and communal harmony in Goa. Additionally, the CSJP urged the authorities to take decisive legal action against Velingkar, citing the need to prevent further disruptions to communal stability, which they believe he is trying to incite through his remarks.
From a legal perspective, Velingkar faces serious consequences as over 12 cases have been filed against him for allegedly "hurting religious sentiments." These legal actions stem from his media statements that criticized St. Francis Xavier, whose relics are enshrined at the Basilica of Bom Jesus Church in Old Goa. This church is not only a place of worship but also a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing pilgrims and tourists from around the world who come to honor the legacy of the saint. Despite the mounting legal challenges and the public outcry, Velingkar has yet to be arrested. On Saturday, he filed for anticipatory bail in a local court, but his plea for interim relief from arrest was denied, and the matter has been scheduled for further hearings on the following Monday.
