US comedian's 'Puerto Rico floating rubbish' jibe at Trump poll rally sparks a dispute

The recent rally held by former President Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden, which was promoted as a triumphant homecoming, quickly descended into controversy due to remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. Known for his podcast *Kill Tony*, Hinchcliffe sparked outrage with comments that many deemed racially insensitive. His offhanded jokes included a claim that "Latinos love making babies," which was met with mixed reactions from the audience. He further compounded the situation by referring to Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage," a comment that drew immediate backlash from various public figures across the political spectrum.

The fallout from Hinchcliffe’s remarks was swift and severe. Prominent figures such as Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Ricky Martin condemned the comments, aligning themselves with Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been vocal about the lack of support for Puerto Rico during Trump's administration. After Hinchcliffe's statements went viral, Lopez and Martin shared clips of Harris's critiques of Trump, particularly highlighting his administration's perceived negligence towards the island following devastating hurricanes.

Congressman Ritchie Torres expressed his dismay on social media, stating, "As a Puerto Rican, I am tempted to call Hinchcliffe racist garbage, but doing so would be an insult to garbage." He emphasized the importance of remembering Trump's history with Puerto Rico as voters head to the polls. Similarly, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the implications of Hinchcliffe’s joke, pointing out that it came from someone sharing a stage with Trump, underlining the deadly toll of the administration’s inaction following the hurricanes, which claimed over 4,000 Puerto Rican lives.

Ricky Martin, with his large social media following, shared a video of Harris’s appeal to Puerto Rican voters, reinforcing the idea that Hinchcliffe’s comments reflect a broader attitude toward Puerto Rico and its people. He tweeted, "This is what they think of us," calling for voters to support Kamala Harris. Bad Bunny echoed this sentiment by sharing a clip from Harris's speech, where she stated, "I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader."

In response to the backlash, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz questioned Hinchcliffe’s comments during a live stream with Ocasio-Cortez, asking, "Who is this jacked?" Hinchcliffe defended himself by claiming that his jokes were taken out of context and insisted that his humor was not meant to be racist. He expressed frustration over the criticism from public figures, particularly noting the involvement of a vice presidential candidate in dissecting his jokes. Hinchcliffe asserted, "These people have no sense of humor. Wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his 'busy schedule' to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist." He added, "I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone—watch the whole set. I'm a comedian Tim—might be time to change your tampon."

As the controversy continues to unfold, the incident highlights the delicate nature of comedy in today's political climate, particularly when it intersects with sensitive cultural and racial topics. Hinchcliffe's remarks have ignited a conversation about accountability and the responsibilities of public figures, especially in the context of their comedic expressions and the potential harm they can cause.
