Yahya Sinwar was seen inside the tunnel before the October 7 attack in a new video released by Israel

The Israeli army has recently released new footage of Yahya Sinwar, a prominent leader of Hamas, recorded just a day before the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The video, dated October 6, captures Sinwar walking through an underground tunnel accompanied by his wife and children, while carrying various supplies intended for a bunker that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would later uncover. Notably, his wife can be seen holding a Birkin bag valued at approximately $32,000, which has sparked significant discussion and criticism, particularly in light of the dire humanitarian conditions faced by many residents in Gaza.

The IDF Spokesperson, Nadav Shoshani, emphasized the video’s implications, highlighting that Sinwar was preparing for the violence that would soon erupt, all while seemingly hiding beneath civilian populations. In his statement, Shoshani remarked, "Sinwar hours before the October 7 massacre: taking down his TV into his tunnel, hiding underneath his civilians, and preparing to watch his terrorists murder, kidnap, and rape." This characterization paints a picture of Sinwar as a leader more concerned with his personal safety and comfort than the well-being of the people around him.

In a further statement, Avichay Adraee, another IDF spokesperson, pointed out the glaring disparity between Sinwar's apparent wealth and the struggles of ordinary Gazans. He tweeted, "While Gaza residents have no money for food, we see many examples of Yahya Sinwar and his wife's special love for money." Accompanying his tweet was a screenshot of Sinwar's wife holding the luxurious Birkin bag, which led Adraee to question, "Did Sinwar's wife enter the tunnel with him on October 6 carrying a Birkin bag estimated to cost about $32,000?!"

Sinwar, aged 61, had been at the helm of Hamas since July 2023, following Ismail Haniyeh. As a key figure in the organization, he was one of Israel’s primary targets during the ongoing conflict. He was ultimately killed in a confrontation with Israeli soldiers in Rafah on October 17, 2023. The IDF has also released footage depicting Sinwar’s last moments, showing him slumped in a chair, covered in dust, and with a bleeding right hand. In a poignant moment, the drone footage captured him throwing a stick at the drone, which could be interpreted as either an act of desperation or defiance in his final moments.

In addition to the footage, the Israeli military has intensified its psychological operations by dropping leaflets in southern Gaza displaying Sinwar's dead body, with blood running down his forehead. The leaflets conveyed a stark message, stating, “Sinwar destroyed your lives,” and further warned, “Whoever lays down his weapons and returns the kidnapped people to us, we will allow him to leave and live in peace.” This tactic aims to demoralize Hamas supporters while encouraging disillusioned militants to defect.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly declared that Israel's military operations will continue unabated until all hostages are freed and that Israeli forces will remain in Gaza to prevent a weakened Hamas from re-establishing itself in the territory. This statement reinforces Israel's commitment to its military objectives, despite the humanitarian fallout that continues to escalate in the region.

On the other hand, Hamas has made it clear that it will not release hostages unless there is a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. This stance indicates a complex and deeply entrenched cycle of conflict, characterized by ongoing violence, strategic maneuvers, and a lack of mutual willingness to engage in negotiations. As the situation develops, both sides appear entrenched in their positions, leaving the prospects for peace increasingly uncertain amid the tragic toll on civilians and the broader implications for regional stability. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with many innocent lives caught in the crossfire of these ongoing hostilities.
