Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Gautam Gambhir responds to Ricky Ponting's criticism of Virat Kohli

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly stood by senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma amid recent criticism from former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who commented on Kohli's form, suggesting that any player with just two centuries in five years would not have remained in the team. Ponting’s remarks highlighted the challenges faced by Kohli and Rohit in recent Test series, leading some critics to question their positions within the lineup. However, Gambhir was quick to brush aside Ponting's observations, stating that they are irrelevant to Indian cricket and emphasizing his confidence in the veteran duo’s commitment and talent.

In a pre-series press conference before India’s departure for the upcoming five-Test series against Australia, Gambhir addressed the growing scrutiny over the form of the two star players. Gambhir expressed full faith in both Kohli and Rohit, emphasizing their resilience, hunger, and relentless dedication. He noted that Ponting's opinions on the matter bear little relevance to the Indian side’s internal dynamics, as both Kohli and Rohit continue to demonstrate a strong drive to succeed. Highlighting the importance of their experience, Gambhir emphasized that both batters have consistently delivered for India across formats over the years and remain vital to the team’s future success.

2024 has undeniably been challenging for Kohli and Rohit, particularly in Test cricket. Rohit has managed 588 runs in 11 matches, averaging 29.40, with two centuries and two fifties. Meanwhile, Kohli's record this year stands at 250 runs from six matches (12 innings) with an average of just 22.72 and a single half-century. Their recent form came under intense scrutiny following India’s 0-3 series defeat against New Zealand, a result that intensified the pressure on India’s senior players to elevate their performance ahead of the crucial Australia series.

With India needing a 4-1 series win over Australia to qualify directly for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Kohli and Rohit’s form is more vital than ever. The team’s chances of reaching their third consecutive WTC Final hinge on the ability of their experienced players to deliver under pressure, particularly against an Australian team renowned for its formidable lineup and competitive edge. The coaching staff, led by Gambhir, is hopeful that the seasoned pair can rediscover their best form and make a significant impact in the series, which would not only stabilize India's batting order but also provide a morale boost to the rest of the squad.

This series against Australia represents a critical juncture for Kohli and Rohit. For Kohli, it’s an opportunity to reinforce his stature as one of the modern game's most prolific batters and silence any lingering doubts about his form in the longest format. For Rohit, the Test series offers a chance to lead from the front, displaying consistency and determination as captain and setting an example for his teammates. Gambhir and the team management are counting on both batters to channel their wealth of experience, make technical adjustments as needed, and deliver impactful performances that will be crucial to India’s success in this high-stakes series.

As Gambhir reiterated, the desire to perform and contribute to the team remains alive and well within the Indian dressing room. Kohli and Rohit's unwavering dedication to the sport is not only inspiring but also essential as India heads into one of its most challenging Test series yet. Their efforts could well be the key to securing a place in the WTC Final and continuing India’s dominance in world cricket.
