Cyclone Fengal landfall in hours, flights hit as rain pounds Chennai

Heavy rain and powerful winds continued to lash Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, and neighboring Puducherry as Cyclone Fengal (pronounced Feinjal) approached the southeastern coastline of India. The cyclone, which is predicted to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry later on Saturday evening, has caused widespread disruptions, paralyzing normal life, and triggering extensive precautionary measures across the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for seven coastal districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds, with speeds reaching up to 90 km/h. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to official advisories to ensure safety. The government is on high alert as the region braces for the cyclone’s impact.

Key Developments on Cyclone Fengal

Flight Operations Suspended

Operations at Chennai International Airport have been halted between 12:30 PM and 7:00 PM due to the high crosswinds predicted during the cyclone’s landfall. Airlines, including IndiGo, have announced temporary suspensions of arrivals and departures. An IndiGo flight (6E1412) from Abu Dhabi to Chennai had to be diverted to Bengaluru due to unfavorable weather conditions. Passengers have been advised to check for updates and make alternate travel arrangements as needed.

Train Services Reduced

Local train services in Chennai’s suburban sections are running at reduced frequency intervals as a precautionary measure. The Southern Railways has also alerted passengers about potential delays and urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

Educational Institutions Closed

Schools and colleges in several districts, including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu, have been ordered to remain shut today. To ensure the safety of employees, the Tamil Nadu government has also advised IT companies to adopt work-from-home protocols for their workforce.

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

Chennai and nearby districts, including Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur, have been witnessing relentless downpours since early morning. Waterlogging has been reported in many low-lying areas, and municipal workers are actively deploying pumps to prevent further flooding. The state has also suspended public transport services along key roads, such as the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), to minimize risks to commuters.

Relief Camps and Emergency Preparations

Over 2,220 relief camps have been set up across Tamil Nadu to accommodate those displaced by the cyclone. So far, around 500 people have taken refuge in relief centers in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. Essential supplies, including food, drinking water, and blankets, are being distributed at these centers. The Indian Navy’s flood relief teams have also been deployed in vulnerable areas, equipped with motor pumps, generators, and boats for emergency rescue operations. Toll-free numbers—112 and 1077—have been activated for those seeking assistance.

Precautionary Measures

Local authorities have removed billboards, advertisement hoardings, and other potentially hazardous objects to prevent accidents caused by falling debris during strong winds. The government has also closed beaches and restricted access to waterfronts to ensure public safety.

Puducherry’s Preparations and Impact

Puducherry, a popular tourist destination, has also been hit by heavy rains and strong winds. Schools, colleges, and major tourist spots, including the famous Beach Road, have been closed to prevent public movement near the coastline. Residents of low-lying areas have been evacuated, with many housed in temporary shelters. The Puducherry administration closely monitors the situation and has assured citizens of adequate support and assistance.

Warnings and Public Advisory

The IMD has warned of a storm surge during the cyclone’s landfall, with sea levels expected to rise by up to 1 meter in the affected coastal areas. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until further notice. The government has also urged citizens to stock essential supplies, remain indoors, and stay updated through official channels for real-time alerts.

As Cyclone Fengal moves closer to landfall, coordinated efforts by the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry administrations, along with disaster response teams, aim to minimize damage and protect lives. With thousands of people already housed in relief centers, emergency supplies deployed, and transport services restricted, both regions are demonstrating resilience and preparedness in the face of the severe weather event.
