Maharashtra's story takes a turn when Eknath Shinde leaves and the Mahayuti meeting is canceled

The political landscape in Maharashtra remains tense and uncertain as the formation of the new government under the Mahayuti alliance faces delays. A key meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss portfolio distribution was unexpectedly canceled when caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde departed for his village in Satara district, pushing crucial decisions further.

Shinde, along with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and NCP's Ajit Pawar, had just returned to Mumbai after high-level talks in Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda. These discussions were centered on finalizing the power-sharing arrangement after the BJP-led coalition's decisive victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections. Sources suggest Shinde is expected back in Mumbai on Saturday to resume deliberations.

Speculation arose over whether Shinde was dissatisfied with the developments, but Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant dismissed such claims, emphasizing that Shinde was treated with respect during the Delhi meeting. According to Samant, Shinde made his demands known "respectfully," and these will be reviewed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP, emerging as the dominant partner with 132 seats, has not yet formalized its choice for Chief Minister, but Devendra Fadnavis is widely expected to reclaim the position. The Shiv Sena, with 57 seats, and Ajit Pawar's NCP, with 41, are focused on securing significant cabinet roles. Reports suggest a likely power-sharing arrangement featuring two deputy chief ministers to balance the interests of the alliance's major constituents. The BJP is expected to allocate around 20 ministerial positions, with the Shiv Sena likely receiving more berths than the NCP.

Shinde’s Position in Question

During the Delhi discussions, it was reportedly conveyed to Shinde that Fadnavis would assume the Chief Minister's role, leaving Shinde the option of serving as Deputy Chief Minister. Initially resistant, Shinde softened his stance but requested the home portfolio if this arrangement proceeds. Shiv Sena leaders have argued for Shinde’s continuation as Chief Minister, citing his successful initiatives, including the Ladki Bahin scheme, as grounds for retaining the post.

Shinde, however, appeared to defer to the BJP's leadership, stating, "Whatever decision you make is final for BJP, and it is final for us." His son, MP Shrikant Shinde, reiterated his father's commitment to the alliance, emphasizing his dedication to collective governance over personal ambitions.

Nonetheless, the possibility of Shinde accepting a secondary role remains uncertain. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat voiced doubts, noting, "It does not befit a person who has already served as Chief Minister to take on a deputy role." This sentiment reflects the underlying tensions within the alliance as power-sharing negotiations continue.

Next Steps

The delay in finalizing leadership and cabinet positions underscores the complex dynamics of the Mahayuti alliance. While the BJP appears resolute in its plans, balancing the aspirations of its partners will be crucial to ensuring stability. With key players set to reconvene in the coming days, the path forward remains uncertain, but the decisions made will significantly shape Maharashtra's political future.
